Beachhaven

Auckland, New Zealand

A unique site facing north and surrounded by water on two sides provided the setting for this project. The clients brief was open to interpretation, the only definites being a 125 child nursery and a 20 person teen parent centre.

Extensive research into the site history identified a Maori midden on the waters edge and the destruction of a huge kauri forest that once dominated the whole area.

Our concept for this building references these things, crucial to the ‘spirit of the place’ and weaves them into a simple elegant form. The oval form and its outer posts recall the distinctive form of a Maori pallisaded Pa, typical of a water side settlement, whilst the many posts also remind us of the many trunks of the rich Kauri forest. Colour has been overlaid on the posts, each one being a separate shade completing the full spectrum around the oval, also symbolising the ethnic diversity and harmony of the area – a fitting finish in a place for children.
