Devonport House, Conservatory Addition

Website

This bungalow alteration called for a rear addition to “open up” the house to the garden beyond. The brief also included the conversion of a spare bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe/en-suite bathroom space.

From a conservation viewpoint, it was important to provide the desired inside/outside relationship without affecting the intrinsic character of the bungalow itself. A conservatory addition, which simply extended the basic envelope of the existing house, provided the required spacious, light and airy transition to the outside without compromising the bungalow form. Steel and timber were used for the roof framing and double-glazed timber doors and windows were utilised in the construction.

The new bathroom and walk-in wardrobe spaces feature rich earthy tones favoured by the client. In the en-suite an impressive full-height mirror wall backs the floating vanity, and the warm tones are illuminated and enhanced by a skylight over the open shower area.

The project exemplifies what can be achieved to revitalise an existing house to meet contemporary expectations without adversely impacting upon the characteristic qualities of the property.
