Lawson House

A bold distinction between old and new dominates the vernacular throughout this home with the fusion of contemporary and traditional immediately evident from the exterior. The facade plays host to traditional white horizontal weatherboards in the original part of the villa, alongside naturally stained vertical cedar cladding in the extension.

In Auckland's inner suburb of Grey Lynn, the original dark, damp villa was in need of extensive restoration and extension to reflect the changing needs of a growing family. What transpired was the a three-level extension that peaks out from the eastern side of the house and stands above the ridgeline of the original villa.

Contrasts in material and finish are deliberately used throughout as you pass from historic to modern. Entering the home, you are lead down the existing enclosed hallway before the house opens up into a light-filled double-height space that wraps around the upper level living. Vertical cedar is used in the interior too, reflecting the volume of space and creating warmth against the original white walls.

The extension drops one level lower than the original house, which allows for the bulk of the addition to be reduced in part, and a stronger relationship developed between old and new. Sunken courtyards and clearstory windows in the lower level ensure spaces are naturally light filled, and cascading outdoor spaces from the upper level create an increased sense of privacy in the higher bedrooms.

Vast views are captured across the hills of Grey Lynn to the city skyline from the main bedroom and living areas on the top level of the extension.
