Medical Assurance Society Fit-Out

Rubber flooring with impressive eco-credentials adds integrity and serviceability to a workplace hospitality space. When the Medical Assurance Society moved to their new central Wellington offices, the design by Herriot Melhuish O’Neill Architects featured products that brought through brand colours in subtle and sleek ways.

To evoke the ethical dimensions of the respected insurer, the architects have created a paperless workspace and a flexible kitchen/dining area for staff and clients that showcases the extraordinary views of Wellington Harbour.

Thanks to products such as Neoflex™ Reco rubber flooring, the architects have been able to apply for a Green Star sustainability rating for the fit-out from the New Zealand Green Building Council. The durable Reco series of products are 100% EPDM synthetic rubber – featuring 75% recycled rubber content – and achieve sustainability targets affordably. Sustainability and durability were the key criteria in the selection of flooring for this prestige project, according to Amber Gray from Herriot Melhuish O’Neill. ‘We have used the product in previous projects, so we knew it was quality flooring that stands the test of time,’ Gray says.

‘It is supplied in sheets which look good in large areas. It’s easy to clean and has great acoustic properties to create a comfortable work environment.’ Neoflex Reco products are a key feature of the kitchen and hospitality area design, echoing the colour of the harbour on display, tying in the blues and greens of the brand, and contrasting with the carpet tiles used elsewhere in the office.

As the kitchen/dining area is frequently used for gatherings – internal staff events, client hospitality, rugby nights, and of course watching Wellington’s famous firework displays – it needed a robust and attractive flooring solution that helped bring the outdoors inside.

‘Here, the relationship to work areas had to be kept open so that adjacent workspaces can also see the harbour and benefit from natural light,’ says Gray. ‘This called for quality finishes in the hospitality space to enhance the overall office experience.’
