Monty Suncatcher was designed to catch the sun and features a mixture of complementary timbers.
Monty Suncatcher is a remodelled family home in Melbourne’s Montmorency. Featuring reclaimed Southern Blue Gum timber, powerfully protected with CUTEK® Extreme CD50 and CUTEK® Interior, this project transformed a simple family home into a garden oasis.
Like many weatherboard Melbourne houses built in the last century, this build was designed for function over form. Choosing to renovate gave the homeowners the opportunity to rework the design, not only to improve function for the needs of their family, but also the form of the house itself. High on the priority list was retaining the natural glory of the garden and to complement this, the designer and architect chose to work with timber for the homes exterior cladding. Reclaimed Southern Blue Gum timber was used to build most of the home’s extension, which was complemented with a Silver Top Ash deck and Blackbutt pergola. To further enhance the beauty of surrounding garden, all exterior timber was coated with clear CUTEK® Extreme CD50 so that it would silver and grey off over time, while also protecting it for years to come against cupping, warping, splitting and improve dimensional stability of the boards.
The warmth of timber outside followed inside as the interior features plywood lining the walls, ceiling and joinery. Each carefully chosen element offers a sense of welcome and character, while also being hardy and durable for a family home. To add further protection to the plywood, CUTEK® Interior was applied. Offering a matte, clear finish CUTEK® Interior allows the wood to look as though it is uncoated, while powerfully protected from dust, grease, and all manner of home-living wear.
By choosing CUTEK® Step 2 timber products, the timber inside and outside of Monty Suncatcher will remain powerfully protected overtime while displaying the natural beauty of the wood.

CUTEK® began as a problem solver in the market. We understood that timber is beautiful, however because it is a natural resource, it can have some inherent problems when using it to create lasting structures. The original CUTEK® formula was created to displace water from timber, giving it increased dimensional stability. We have then evolved to create other formulas included CUTEK® Wood Preservative, a decorative wood coating (that is able to be coloured) which makes timber resistant to mould, fungus and termites while also keeping it dimensionally stable.
CUTEK® is forever anticipating change and need. If someone wants to use timber in a unique way, or in a unique setting, we want to work alongside them, troubleshooting the problem towards an inspired solution.
We have always been, and always will be, champions for the use of the timber in the building industry. If you want to use it, we will help you find a way.
