Opened in March 2022, Te Noninga Kumu - Motueka Public Library creates a new learning and cultural hub for the community.

Referencing the functional and traditional forms of farm buildings, the building takes visual cues from the rich local heritage of horticultural barns and storage sheds.

Cultural design elements within the entry facade and landscape design enhances a sense of common ownership, responsibility, and respect for the building. The art-filled space is presided over by Huriawa, the kaitiaki taniwha who dived deep to clear the caverns of Te Waikoropūpū Springs.

The glazed frontage to Wallace Street connects the building to the street and draws daylight in. The relaxed veranda space facing Decks Reserve provides views and engages with the reserve outlook.

Utilising a fully timber structure, the building delivers a low carbon and energy efficient solution for this community space.
