Opito Bay House

This is a modest holiday home overlooking remote Opito Bay at the top of the Coromandel Peninsula. The clients wanted an easy care home placing emphasis on the views and relaxed living.

The house nestles into the side of a small basalt outcrop and fans up and around the contour, so that it perches ‘over’ the sea.  This allows the spaces to flow easily to the outside giving each room privacy, sun and a unique view shaft to the bay and islands beyond.  Courtyards break up the form and provide sheltered outdoor entertainment areas.  Care was taken to avoid balustrades to courtyards and maximise the flow of all areas to the bay.

Internally, exposed timber rafters fan out with the skillion roofs, drawing the eye out to the bay while giving warmth and a human craft to the interior.

The house is clad in a subdued palette of natural stone, plaster and cedar, which combined with the scalloped eave detail, reminiscent of the wings of a gurnard, give the design its playful and organic feel.
