Once a humble federation timber cottage, has now been transformed into an architectural design extension that boasts ample living space, amenities and natural light.

Responding to the brief of a growing family, Finna Studio has designed a spacious family home, overcoming the challenge of a typical block size found in Sydney’s Inner Western suburb of Rozelle.

By maximising the amount of fenestration on the north-westerly side of the block, the home is able to harness the natural light at the most optimum time of day to light up spaces that are mostly used day to day. The southeastern side of the block is reserved to wet areas and transitional spaces, however not forgotten, with the instalment of skylights to light these spaces naturally.

Paperbark projects have worked to build in hard-wearing, durable materials that have been used throughout to batter the many bumps it’ll endure through the years.

The kitchen, adjacent to the outdoor space serve as the central piece of the home, subtly inviting occupants and guests to circulate.
Bi-fold windows extend the entire length of the extension. Orientated towards the north, maximising the opportunity for natural light to fill the common spaces throughout the day.

Following the contour of the site, the kitchen, living and other wet areas sits below street level, accessed through a transitional space where the original dwelling terminated.

Employing contrasting materials and colours aids a visual separation between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Introducing large skylights into the southern spaces within the home allows for natural light to enter, limiting the dependence on artificial lighting.
Materials with neutral tones are contrasted with darker pallet natural materials. Maximising texture allows a gradient of tones on light colour materials caused by the overhead skylight.
The entry to the shared bathroom, located in the transitional zone of the home, is graced with custom joinery, maximising the space available.

Green finger tiles and fluted glass cut the ensuite to a different class. Brass fixtures and ornate lights embellish the private bathroom.
