An elegant custom Axminster carpet designed to bring lightness, durability and timeless sophistication to one of Melbourne's premier hospitality destinations.
For the refurbishment of the Grand Ballroom and adjoining mezzanine foyer at Pullman Melbourne on the Park, Wautier Carpets developed a bespoke Axminster carpet that balances visual softness with the rigorous performance demands of a major hospitality venue. The design features an abstracted wing motif flowing across an elegant off-white ground, layered with rich royal blue tones and delicate gold flecks that evoke the appearance of metallic thread woven through its solid wool construction.
Beyond its aesthetic presence, the lighter palette was a deliberate design response to the ballroom environment. During gala events, conferences and evening functions where lighting levels are often reduced, the softer ground colour helps reflect ambient light throughout the space, creating a greater sense of openness, cleanliness and luminosity. Rather than allowing the room to recede into darkness, the carpet contributes to an atmosphere of refinement and warmth, supporting the architectural lighting scheme while maintaining a feeling of lightness across the expansive floorplate.
The carpet was manufactured to a premium, high-density hospitality specification, engineered specifically for the intensive traffic demands of a leading international hotel. While light-coloured carpets are often approached with caution in commercial settings, the combination of dense Axminster construction, high wool content and considered patterning provides both resilience and long-term visual performance. The design was developed with confidence that it would withstand years of banquets, galas, conferences and daily guest circulation while maintaining its character and depth.
This confidence is further supported by the venue’s adoption of the HOST® Dry Extraction Cleaning System, a maintenance program widely respected for preserving the appearance and longevity of commercial carpet installations. The low-moisture cleaning process is particularly well suited to premium wool hospitality flooring, helping to maintain presentation standards, minimise downtime and support the long-term lifecycle of the installation. Together, the specification, materiality and maintenance strategy ensure the ballroom carpet remains a lasting feature of one of Melbourne’s most iconic hospitality destinations.
