University of Melbourne
In partnership with Cooke & Dowsett, our company supplied 1,566 Atlantis Flo-Vault® modules for the construction of a 246KL rainwater tank at the University of Melbourne. Completed at the end of 2021, this project aimed to support the university’s sustainability goals by harvesting and storing rainwater for various non-potable uses, thereby reducing reliance on the municipal water supply and promoting environmental stewardship.
Project Background: The University of Melbourne is renowned for its commitment to sustainability and environmental innovation. As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance water conservation, the university sought to implement a large-capacity rainwater harvesting system. Cooke & Dowsett, a respected plumbing and civil infrastructure company, was tasked with delivering this vital project.
Objectives:
Water Conservation: To significantly reduce the university’s dependence on municipal water by harvesting rainwater for irrigation, toilet flushing, and other non-potable applications.
Sustainability: To integrate a sustainable water management system that aligns with the university’s green initiatives.
Educational Value: To create an infrastructure project that also serves as a practical demonstration of sustainable practices for students and staff.
Solution:
Flo-Vault® Modules Our Atlantis Flo-Vault® system was chosen for its proven performance and adaptability in rainwater harvesting applications. The key advantages of the Flo-Vault® modules include:
- High Storage Efficiency: Designed to maximize water storage capacity within a compact footprint.
- Robust Design: Engineered to endure significant loads and pressures, ensuring long-term reliability.
- Easy Installation: The modular design allows for quick assembly and installation, minimizing disruption to the university campus.
Steps:
- Site Preparation: Excavating the designated area on the university campus to accommodate the rainwater tank.
- Site Preparation: Installation of the Atlantis Waterproof Mem brane (liner).
- Site Preparation: Installation of the Atlantis Geotextile fabric.
- Module Assembly: Assembling the 1,566 Flo-Vault® modules on-site. The modular system facilitated efficient and precise assembly.
The installation of the Flo-Vault® rainwater tank at the University of Melbourne yielded several positive outcomes:
- Significant Water Savings: The 246KL capacity of the tank ensures substantial rainwater harvesting, reducing the university’s reliance on external water sources.
- Sustainable Infrastructure: The project exemplifies the university’s commitment to sustainability, serving as a model for other institutions.
