Vodafone Building - Christchurch, New Zealand

Website

The Vodafone Innov8 brief required the design team to create a positive, healthy interior environment that not only brought people together but nurtured their wellbeing. With this in mind, the team developed the concept of a laneway tree house, which also helped inform the fit-out concept of the urban village; connecting those working in the office with each other, and with their surroundings.

The use of timber was key in realising this design intent and in bringing a level of familiarity, warmth and tactility to the structure at a level where people will engage with it directly.  Architects Jasmax worked with local timber craftsmen Abodo to come up with natural timber elements that would bring warmth and beauty to the interior, which could then be extended to the exterior aesthetic of the building.

Abodo's Vulcan thermally modified timber was chosen as base material due to its innovation, sustainability, aesthetic and durability qualities.

The strikingly dark timber used on the exterior brings beauty to the building’s design contrasting with hard concrete elements.  A custom rebated profile was developed for the exterior soffits to accommodate thin red fins that tie the timber in with the client’s branding.

Random width and height battens feature on the exterior cladding. These are carried on into the interior stair case, with inset LED lighting that creates an awe-inspiring visual effect. Timber linings in the stairwells add warmth to work spaces and break out areas at landings.
