Whangārei Civic Centre

Covering a total gross floor area of 8,010 m2 and accommodating up to 470 staff members. The primary design goal was to create a welcoming, inclusive, and easily accessible customer experience while reflecting the rich cultural identity and heritage of Whangārei. The project aimed to construct a building that was not only fit-for-purpose but also sustainable in its design and construction.

The design of the building and landscape incorporated cultural narratives, featuring a central area for pōwhiri and mihi whakatau and a community garden with native medicinal herbs. Inside the building, the Council chambers were designed to be versatile, allowing for hui with hapū while following tikanga Māori.

The project presented us with growth into sunny northland, with 28 distinct finishes, The Surface team successfully completed the plastering and painting across the 4 interior floors and the towering 21-meter-high exterior. This achievement was the result of exceptional collaboration with Canam Commercial Ltd and all those involved.

This project stands with cultural sensitivity, and sustainable design and one of a kind interior we are proud to put our name on.
