Designed for a young Australian family with a serious approach to outdoor living, the Hawea Pool Cabana is the jewel in the crown of a secluded property retreat in the Central Otago region of New Zealand.

Positioned as a key figure in the extensively landscaped masterplan, the cabana provides for a range of different outdoor living spaces and represents a collaborative approach between the project team, including Client, Architect, Landscape Architect and local Craftspeople.

The single enclosed volume, has been efficiently planned with no internal circulation, and offers practical and efficient spaces for services, equipment and storage as well as changing room facilities with shower and WC, and a steam room to complete the outdoor living experience.

The covered living space incorporates discrete kitchen, bar and audiovisual equipment and connects to the tennis pavilion, outdoor lounge and dining areas as well as the pool terraces and surrounding gardens.

The building form is defined by a traditional roof pitch of the regional vernacular that respects and reinforces other structures on the property, including the Tennis Pavilion, Managers Cottage and Boat Garage which combine to establish an identity and brand for the property.

The established palette of simple, robust and cost effective materials has been crafted with considered architectural detailing and quality local workmanship that provides simple finishes which are embellished by high quality fittings and fixtures throughout.

The sophisticated yet playful style of the owners is represented in a integrated design that combines to create a surprisingly relaxed and informal amenity that is enjoyed daily in family life and also shared with larger groups for various occasions throughout all seasons.
