Creating indoor/outdoor flow will not only improve your homes livability, but it will also increase its value.

Kiwis love the outdoors. Whether it’s a summer BBQ or a few quite ones out on the deck, an outdoor living space is a popular area in homes across NZ. An outdoor area is an extension of the home and mastering the art of “indoor/outdoor flow” can dramatically increase the amount of livable space in your home. But where is the best place to start when you creating an outdoor living space? And what additions will add the most value?

There are countless ways you can transform your backyard, but not all of them will give you a good return on your investment. Here are our top 3 ways to create an outdoor living space that will add both value and comfort to your home.

1. Building a Deck or a Patio

Let’s start with the basics. The first thing you need to do when creating an outdoor living space, is starting from the ground up! If you are working with level ground, a cost-effective option is to create a patio area. You have an array of different flooring options from loose gravel to tiles and pavers. If your outdoor area is on sloping land, a wooden deck may be a better option. We recommend using building a deck using a quality hardwood. Hardwood not only looks great, but it will also stand the test of time.

2. Add some shelter

Once you have your paving or decking sorted, you want to add some form of shelter. There are many options out there – screens, pergolas, umbrellas. Ideally, you want something that will shelter you from the elements, but also allows you to experience the sunshine. We recommend a louvre system. These are a fixed structure which can be opened or closed, depending on the conditions. This creates a comfortable enclosed space which can quickly transform into an open environment.

3. Outdoor Heating

To get the most out of your outdoor space, you want to make it comfortable all year round. This means installing an outdoor heater. We recommend an electric infrared heater. These are much more energy efficient and heat a space much more effectively than gas heaters. Additionally, we advise our clients to buy NZ made outdoor heaters. This is due to the fact that, many overseas models are prone to rust in our salt-laden air. Make sure you ask for marine grade 316 stainless steel heaters (lower grade stainless steel is prone to corrosion and rust).
