Muuto is rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition characterised by enduring aesthetics, functionality, craftsmanship and an honest expression. By expanding this heritage with forward-looking materials, techniques and bold creative thinking, our ambition is to deliver new perspectives on Scandinavian design
The name, Muuto, comes from the Finnish word muutos, meaning “new perspective.” This philosophy shapes the brand’s approach. Muuto collaborates with contemporary designers who share this mindset, creating pieces that feel familiar yet surprising, objects made sublime through fresh perspectives, recognised worldwide as exemplars of modern Scandinavian design.

Design That Moves People
Muuto explores what makes a space feel just right and how design influences emotions, thoughts, and connections. Understanding design as a multisensory experience that is deeply personal. Its interiors become landscapes for authentic experiences: colours that evoke memories, materials that spark feeling, and shapes that engage the subconscious. Whether through the softness of a fabric, the soothing color of a sofa, or the inviting curve of a chair, Muuto’s designs resonate uniquely with each individual.

The Science Behind Feeling Good: Neuroaesthetics
Muuto’s design philosophy is informed by neuroaesthetics—a growing field that explores how art, design, and sensory experiences influence the mind-body connection. At its core, neuroaesthetics helps us understand how spaces can shape our mood, behavior, and wellbeing. It gives language to something we’ve always intuitively known: design doesn’t just surround us—it changes us.
A leading voice in this field is Susan Magsamen, Founder and Executive Director of the International Arts + Mind Lab at Johns Hopkins University. Magsamen explores how aesthetic experiences can transform our biology and emotional state. As she explains:
“When you have heightened aesthetic experiences… they change you. They change your biology. They change your mood. They change your emotion.”
Muuto’s approach embraces this thinking, guided by five key principles that help shape more intentional, human-centric spaces:
Nature (Biophilia): Integrating natural elements indoors promotes wellbeing and reduces stress by reconnecting people with the outdoors.
Light: Both natural and artificial light affect mood and alertness, with cooler tones energizing and warmer hues promoting calm.
Form: Smooth, rounded shapes are preferred instinctively, offering comfort and ease.
Colour: Colours influence emotions and behavior, providing vibrancy or tranquility depending on their use.
Tactility: The sense of touch plays a vital role, with textures inviting intimacy and deepening connection beyond visual appeal.
By applying these principles, Muuto designs intentional spaces that adapt to users’ needs while promoting wellbeing.
