Lead architect Marina Leeman describes the project as “a sculptural building that responds beautifully to its environment,” a sentiment echoed by the home’s striking presence.

The four-bedroom dwelling is defined by its iconic butterfly roof, a design choice that pays homage to the undulating peaks that surround it. This roof isn't merely aesthetic; it’s a functional element that houses solar panels and channels rainwater into tanks, supporting irrigation and greywater systems. The home’s orientation maximises natural light and captures 360-degree views of Coronet Peak and Cardrona, creating an immersive experience of the landscape.

Energy efficiency is paramount in Wings Over Water. High-performance insulation, triple glazing, and a thoughtfully designed conservatory contribute to the home’s sustainability. “The conservatory acts as a thermal engine for the house, distributing heat in winter and transforming into a breezy courtyard in summer,” Marina explains. Oversized eaves provide natural cooling and warmth throughout the year, ensuring comfort in all seasons.

The choice of materials further grounds the home in its environment. Cedar cladding creates a textured façade that mirrors the shadows of the surrounding landscape, while natural timber flooring by Forte adds warmth and durability. “We chose materials that feel like they’ve grown out of the land, blending seamlessly with the environment,” says builder Edd Bragg of Shore Construction, emphasising the project’s cohesive integration with its setting.

Adding a distinctive artistic dimension to the site is the “Wings Over Water” steel sculpture, a creation by renowned sculptor Simon Max Bannister. This piece complements the architectural language of the home, reinforcing the project’s connection to its name and the surrounding natural elements.
