This luxurious apartment complex, designed by SJB Architects, offers an exclusive blend of beach-meets-city style and makes the most of its swoon-worthy Sydney Harbour location.
ArchiPro recently sat down with SJB Architects' Senior Associate Wesley Grunsell to delve into the intricacies of The Isles project and discover what makes it so unique.
"The Isles has 'offset' halves, broken by the central entry, that match the splay of the boundary line,” Wesley says. “Both halves then use a push-pull design strategy in the facade to provide relief and break down the scale."
This design strategy effectively conceals vehicle lifts within the built form and maintains the prevailing building setback, ensuring no garages disrupt the street's aesthetic.
To the rear, the building levels step evenly down toward the harbour, maintaining the offset halves. SJB Architects introduced palisade balustrades and solid balcony planters to soften the lower-level concrete base. Large incisions to the side facades form secondary private open spaces and planters, breaking down the scale while achieving more formal qualities.
Additionally, the side setbacks and maintained natural ground line re-open views from the street to the harbour beyond, previously blocked by existing garages and street walls.
The location of The Isles is undoubtedly one of its standout features; SJB Architects takes this one step further with his innovative design, bringing nature to the inhabitants' doorstep.
The complex offers protected elevated balconies with panoramic water views and a roof garden on the upper level, providing further viewpoints towards the harbour and cityscape.
"The base of the building is connected directly to the harbour with gardens cascading down to the waterfront," says Wesley. “While the upper level of the building accommodates a roof garden and penthouse with extensive views across the harbour and CBD.”
Limestone flooring, blue-toned marble and walnut veneer create a contemporary, classic mood that complements the waterfront setting. The sense of being part of the unique ecosystem of the harbour is seamlessly integrated into the living experience.
“The interiors were carefully crafted to feel like an extension of the harbour, combining beach and city life through a soft, tonal palette,” says Wesley.
The exterior of The Isles is defined by a robust blend of blonde brick and concrete, referencing the neighbouring streetscape.
“In the early stages of design development, we analysed the existing houses on the street, specifically those that created character and provided a valuable addition to the suburb,” says Wesley.
“We found the houses that used brick had lush greenery that interacted with the public domain and whose envelope maintained a low profile from the street – positively contributing to the character of the suburb and helping instill a harmonious sense of place,” adds Grunsell.
Wesley notes the maroon powder-coated steel windows and doors add delightful touches to the façade, celebrating craftsmanship throughout the building.
Inside the apartments, impeccable attention to detail shines through every room. Using high-end materials and finishes, including designer Doorware hardware, Tirar joinery handles, decorative light fittings, bespoke joinery and Phillip Jeffries wallpapers, elevates The Isles project to new heights.
“Notably, the Gervasoni Brass pendant in the living areas adds a touch of elegance, akin to a delicate sea creature emerging from the ocean's depths,” says Wesley.
In this place, the charm of Sydney's harbour meets the luxury of modern city living, offering residents a truly exceptional waterside experience.
Wesley explains the key element that makes The Isles project so unique is the collaborative effort that brought it to fruition. "We collaborated closely with our client and the project builder [MADE Property Group] to realise the vision of this site,” says Wesley.
“Working with the team of consultants, we went through an iterative and convivial design process to reach an outcome that is highly resolved and befitting to the new residents who are afforded a harbourside lifestyle," Grunsell adds.
In the heart of Sydney's waterfront, The Isles offers a thoughtful design, a connection to nature and the integration of architectural innovation into the existing environment. The team at SJB Architects have created a unique island-like haven on the iconic shores of Sydney Harbour. In this place, the charm of Sydney's harbour meets the luxury of modern city living, offering residents a truly exceptional waterside experience.
