Pro-Spec Electrical, under the guidance of founder Steve Solley, played a pivotal role in the metamorphosis, crafting a well-thought-out grid system that marries functionality with aesthetics. From the electrical outlets to the lighting racks, every detail is both deliberate and precise to embrace a 'whole of design’ approach, something the client wanted out of the space, resulting in a seamless environment in all aspects.
Speaking to Steve, Common Space Studio was an exciting project for the team, and the collaboration between him and Common Space Studio owner Jason brought their shared vision to life. “Jason had his own ideas but was open to suggestions,” says Steve. “It’s easy to just throw some lights on a plan, but taking the time to get creative and go the extra mile really makes a difference. The client can then be happy at the end of the project that we took that extra time at the beginning to come up with a lighting design that will impress for years to come.”
Maintaining the space's raw, industrial elements was a crucial part of the design. “The space was changed from a grimy old mechanics workshop to a high-end creative space designed to inspire and set the scene for photography, modelling and advertising shoots.” The cinder blocks were sandblasted, and the ceiling was painted blush pink, creating a backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the matte black lights, switches and power outlets chosen to complement the aesthetic perfectly.
Upstairs in the main office, hair and makeup area and meeting space, the space is curated with luxurious design elements and rich textures. “We installed paired surface-mounted downlights for direct lighting and LED strip-up lighting in the ceiling beams to fill the room with additional light while creating a feature of the relatively low ceiling beams. We also installed a hanging up/down LED bar light directly over the large shared office desk.”
The stairwell and entrance were designed to be both moody and inviting, with recessed black step lights and stunning BoConcept lights adding a touch of elegance.
Downstairs reveals a more minimalistic approach. “We used track lighting to make it feel a little industrial but also functional, as track lights can be moved and angled around very easily,” explained Steve. “In the large Studio space, we installed LED flood lights tucked up behind the beams and facing away from you as you look in. You can't see them, but as soon as you switch them on, the whole space fills evenly with light. This means there is a blank canvas for any type of photography, and the black ceiling looks tidy and uncluttered with lights.”
The challenges of the space, including lower-height steel beams and concrete block walls, were not seen as limitations but as opportunities for innovation. “We decided to turn these obstacles into features,” Steve explains. “We installed LED strip-up lighting into the beams, and it really created a unique look. Sometimes, obstacles force you to be creative and think outside the box."
Steve and the team's approach to lighting extends beyond illuminating a space, but working to create an atmosphere that serves as both a functional and versatile space. "I love creating multiple lighting options in a space," he says. “I find it nicer to have a bright option (e.g downlights) to give functional light for when you just need to see what you are doing, and then separate feature lighting (eg LED Strips, pendant lighting, Wall lights, Up lighting etc) for a more moody, relaxed feel but functional as well. They also just make and space look cool.”
Common Space Studio is a harmony of raw industrial elements and refined, creative touches, bringing together an environment that inspires artistic endeavours within the space. It is also a reflection of Pro-Spec Electrical’s work and the team’s passion for innovative, thoughtfully designed lighting that extends beyond merely illuminating a space.
