A true creative collaboration sees striking results for this quirky new build.
Architect Dominic Glamuzina’s favourite aspect of the holiday home is the translucent industrial fibreglass cladding. “Some people think it looks like a jellyfish. I love the strange identity that it gets.” The outdoor furniture is from Early Settler.
The build was oriented to the wide views. The balcony from the living room extends past the edge of the building to create a hidden corner. “You can’t see people, people can’t see you from inside. It’s a really cute moment,” says Dominic.
Windows in the building were very carefully considered to capture glimpses of the view. The powdercoated yellow joinery adds to the unconventional aesthetic.
Step down from the front door into the living room, or upstairs to the mezzanine. Interior surfaces are all unified with shades of blue. “There's something nice about deeper, darker spaces,” says Dominic.
Although the house is 87sqm it can accommodate guests. “There are so many different spaces,” says homeowner and interior designer Natalie Parke. The sofa is from Simon James and the hanging chair is by John Crichton.
“Spatially there are these moments like the mezzanine, where we hang onto the precipice of a cliff. It's incredible, it's a real joy,” says Dominic.
The booth seating in the dining nook was made by Fieldcraft and the table was a Trade Me find. “Everything’s the same colour, but we're using texture as the vehicle to move through the space,” says Natalie.
Formica finishes and curtained cupboards in the kitchen add to the bach feel. “When I create a space, I can see it in my head from the beginning, and I don't tend to deviate too much,” says Natalie.
“In the kids’ bunkroom, there’s a ladder up to a third bunk that’s really super vertical. You have this tiny little window that looks back into the kitchen and living space, so you have these secretive, playful little moments,” says Dominic.
The view into the main bedroom. The bed is by Design Mobel, the rug is from iRugs and homeowner Gerry painted the artwork in the stairwell.
Dominic credits build company CTL Construction with keeping the project together. “They were just incredible how they pivoted constantly to a situation that was quite difficult, and made it better.”
