Bespoke Interior joinery designer and manufacturer Greenmount Interiors is a local, family-run business that prides itself on being at the cutting edge of the design industry. Liam Russell, Director of Greenmount Interiors, remarks that the company’s investment in advanced machinery and technology has been a critical differentiator for winning high-end and large-scale projects. From supplying Fletcher Building in the 1980s to working on bespoke projects like camper vans and commercial fit-outs, Greenmount Interiors has continually evolved to meet diverse industry needs.
"We’re not tied to large-scale projects,” says Liam. “At Greenmount Interiors, we manage everything from custom one-off kitchens to large-scale apartment fit-outs, offering full flexibility while maintaining quality."
A project’s design and budget often focus on kitchens and bathrooms as the profit maker. However, Liam notes a growing interest in custom-made, designer joinery for wardrobes, with luxury additions such as sensor lighting, seating and island benches adding significant value to a property.
"Wardrobes are becoming more integral to home design, adding important value,’ notes Liam. “It’s no longer just about shelving and rails. People now want thoughtfully designed walk-in wardrobes with features like pull-out drawers, high-side systems, seating, smart storage and lighting for both functionality and aesthetics."
Liam adds, "We’re seeing a rise in curved elements in interior spaces, particularly in smaller homes. Curves help soften the harshness of rectangular spaces and create a more natural, flowing aesthetic."
"A poorly designed wardrobe is wasted space,” remarks Liam. “If you invest in thoughtful, bespoke design—considering heights for coats and shirts, drawers with high sides, or even lighting—it transforms your storage into something functional and enjoyable and adds value to the home, just like kitchens and bathrooms do."
Every element of this luxurious Herne Bay Penthouse apartment fit-out was custom-built by Greenmount Interiors to maximise space and reflect the uniqueness of the apartment's unusual circular architecture.
Situated in the Jervois Apartment building by Artifact Property, Monk Mackenzie and Amelia Holmes. Greenmount Interiors created kitchen cabinetry, sophisticated wardrobes, bathroom vanities and mirror units, including Corian tops and basins, custom wall panelling, headboards, and a functional laundry area.
All were crafted with a consistent materiality that one could never tire of—a stunning Amercian White Oak, quarter-cut veneer with a Woca Sand Grey stain.
Working within tight access constraints, Greenmount Interiors delivered the four-metre-long benchtop in multiple pieces via the elevator, seamlessly joining the Corian sections to create the illusion of a singular appearance.
The display boxes and floating nightstands are mounted on custom-made metal brackets, crafted in Greenmount Interiors’ steel workshop, and seamlessly integrate into the veneer wall panelling.
Liam reflects on how Greenmount Interiors assists New Zealand specifiers, "Our strength lies not just in having cutting-edge technology but in how we apply it."
“Whether it’s a hidden door for a scullery or large-scale veneer panelling in a bedroom, our approach to specifiers’ projects leads to innovation that we can then offer to the design industry."
"We aim to say ‘yes’ to every challenge. Whether it's a custom project from an architect or interior designer or a new trend in joinery, we innovate, problem solve and find solutions, then apply them across all our work—constantly learning and improving," says Liam.
When considering wardrobe design, it’s important to focus on both practicality and style.
Liam suggests maximising your space with smart storage solutions like adjustable shelving, drawers and custom hanging options.
“Whether a walk-in or built-in wardrobe, the design should seamlessly fit into your room layout and lifestyle,” Liam says. “Look for materials, colours, and finishes that suit your home’s aesthetic while keeping the design functional and timeless.”
“It’s also crucial to choose a company with extensive cabinet-making expertise to ensure top-quality craftsmanship and durability. A well-designed wardrobe should not only look great but also enhance your daily routine by making your space more efficient and organised.”
