The founder of HANRAD Bespoke Rugs, Barry Radford, talks to us about the incredible process of translating NZ Artist Gaye Jurisich's artwork into the extraordinary and luxurious Art Rug 'I Want to Get Away, I Want to Fly Away'.
“Our journey of reinterpreting the fabulous original painting, 'I Want to Get Away, I Want to Fly Away', began in February 2023, and took us on a six-month adventure with the colourful and vibrant artist, Gaye Jurisich.
The colour palette was chosen from the original artwork at the initial stages of the design process. It is a painstaking task that requires careful consideration. We also contemplate the types of yarn we will use as this impacts the overall visual effect on the surface of the rug. Incorporating New Zealand worsted wool, standard gauge wool, and art silk creates the delicate graduations of colour depicted in the original artwork. Combining different colours and yarn types create the unique colour blends that are evidenced in the finished Art Rug".

“The original artwork is full of emotion that is expressed through gestural mark-making and colour resulting in a work that encapsulates Jurisich's world. It was vital for us to take care at every step of the process to ensure we captured the essence and emotion of the work”.

Gaye Jurisich is a multi-disciplinary artist with a particular interest in the interconnections between elements and their surrounding space. Her work explores the encounters between natural and industrial materials, arranging them in mostly unaltered and ephemeral states. She is fascinated with the resulting juxtapositions and mutuality that arise from these encounters, often without the need for authorship or ownership.
