In this series, we share the style cues homeowners can take from some of Australia’s most beautiful shops, hotels, bars and restaurants. Get ready to be inspired!

Located in Adelaide, Fugazzi is an Italian and New York-inspired bar and dining venue created by Studio Gram in collaboration with Design People and BuildInc. Showcasing a diverse selection of materials arranged by a masterful hand, this project uses velvet, leather, marble, inlaid geometric scraps, timber and custom joinery to build a contemporary interpretation of the old Italian foodie institutions hidden in New York City.

Curtains hang above the intimate timber dining booths in the restaurant, cocooning the space in a sense of comfort, while the hardness of marble tables is softened by the plush seating upholstery. A curated selection of art and objects ensures a lighter mood in the restaurant, while the masculine tones and dark opulence of the drinking den sets an altogether different scene. Shapely custom joinery finished in high-gloss red is carried throughout the whole – along with hints of brass – tying the two schemes together.

The welcoming golden glow of ambient lighting is ever-present at Fugazzi, while unexpected appearances of chequer and stripes serve as playful reminders that this sophisticated place doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Lessons in design

Apply these decorative techniques to your own home or project to recreate your favourite elements of Fugazzi.

Unite a difficult material selection with tone

Although there are many different materials used in the Fugazzi interiors, such as marble, tiles, leather, timber and steel, they are all united by a shared warm base note that lends itself to brown, red and black equally. Do this yourself by ensuring your selected materials all sit within the same colour family, or share a similar base of cool or warmer tones.

Maximise your space with clever shapes

The Fugazzi uses curved booths, banquette seating and round tables to accommodate a group of people within a compact space. This clever design trick is perfect for small homes and can be incorporated into kitchens, dining areas and living rooms where floor space is scarce but seating is necessary. Simply engage a professional joiner or cabinet maker to fit an available nook or alcove with built-in banquette seating, then finish with a small-to-medium round table.

Add interest with an accent colours

A high-gloss fire-engine red has been strategically sprinkled throughout the interiors of Fugazzi. These points of interest catch your eye then encourage it to explore the scheme further, jumping from one pop of colour to the next. Recreate this effect at home by peppering your interiors with unexpected cameos of colour across soft furnishings, decorative objects, statement furniture and artworks – the brighter the hue, the better!

Thanks to the gleaming brass base, this brown leather bar stool from Home Italia would feel right at home in the drinking den at Fugazzi. However, this piece could also fit into an industrial or mid-century modern interior with ease.

Echoing the warm colours of the dining tables at Fugazzi, this marble table from French Country Collections is a versatile item with timeless appeal. The simple construction and classic combination of brass and marble means it'll never go out of style.

Walking the line between contemporary and nostalgic, the exposed spherical globes of this pendant light from Citta make it a welcome addition to minimal, contemporary or even industrial-themed homes. At Fugazzi, this pendant is hung over tables and booths to visually 'zone' each dining space.

While bespoke cabinetry in a high-gloss finish may not fit into every home, this storage unit from Space Furniture certainly can. Pretty and practical, the statement red hue will pop in any position, while the cut-out smiling face adds a sense of fun to any space. It's the perfect companion for children's rooms and palettes of primary colours.

Whether hung upon a wall or propped in a corner, an oversized mirror is a must-have that creates the illusion of space while bouncing light around a dark room. Opt for a gilded frame if Parisian-chic is your goal, thin and black if minimal is more your style, and a frameless glass for contemporary settings. If old-school nostalgia and speak-easy elegance is the look you're after, make like Fugazzi and go for a bold black timber frame such as this one from Mark Tuckey
