Fast, effective fire protection with Masons lightweight AAC wall panel system

The system is based around Masons dense yet lightweight 50mm Enviro autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) panel and is designed to be a complete fire and acoustic solution for intertenancy walls.
The AAC panels withstand intense heat while other elements like mortar and mineral wool seals help to contain heat and smoke, preventing them from transferring between units.
‘Fire resistance is primarily due to the non-combustible nature of aerated concrete, complemented by Enviro mortar sealing between panels,’ says Masons Technical Manager Arthur Whitfield. ‘In relation to the Building Code, our system significantly exceeds the minimum fire resistance requirements.’

Exceeds the regulations for guaranteed compliance
The Enviro AAC Intertenancy Wall System can be installed up to three storeys continuously, bringing proven passive fire protection to multi-level residential and commercial projects.
For CETA Homes, who trialled the system in a 13-unit townhouse development in Pukekohe, Auckland, the ease of installation and guaranteed compliance made it an unqualified success, says Project Manager David Hall.
‘This was a simple two-storey box form, and the Masons panel gave us all the fire rating we needed. We added mineral wool in the roof and cladding cavity, and that was it. There was no need to line for noise either because the acoustic rating was taken care of, too.’
‘The Building Code mandates a sound transmission class (STC) of 55, and the Enviro system achieves approximately 64, giving occupants greater acoustic comfort,’ notes Arthur. ‘For fire resistance, the Code requires only 30 minutes in most situations, but our AAC panel system offers a Fire Resistance Rating of 120 minutes.
‘We have put this system through rigorous tests at accredited New Zealand laboratories, successfully demonstrating resistance to extreme heat, upwards of 800 to 1000 degrees Celsius.’

Simple installation and future-proof performance
The Masons system is designed for simplicity and flexibility during installation, with as few as two builders required to put it up, while other work can flow around the installation.
‘What stood out was how straightforward it was to install,’ agrees David. ‘With a simple bracket and channel set-up, it was easy to get a clean, straight line from the start. It helped keep things moving on site and gave the team confidence in the outcome.’
The Masons team also have confidence that the Enviro AAC Intertenancy Wall System provides significant futureproofing, anticipating potential increases in New Zealand’s residential fire resistance standards from 30 to possibly 60 minutes.
‘This gives developers and buyers more peace of mind should regulations change to follow international standards,’ says Arthur. ‘And we’re delighted with the system’s performance, ease of use, and growing acceptance among builders and architects.’
