A bold new direction in compact kitchen design has launched in New Zealand. Discover The Floating range, a customisable kitchenette pre-plumbed and pre-wired that can be installed in just one hour.

Auckland-based prefabricated kitchen designer and manufacturer, Kitchenette, is turning heads in the architectural and design community this month with its innovative new floating kitchenette range, a sleek and space-enhancing alternative to traditional flatpack kitchen systems. The Floating range adds to the company’s existing line of pre-assembled kitchenettes, but with a design-forward twist aimed squarely at architects, developers, and interior designers who want a point of difference for their next project, particularly in multi-unit and small-footprint projects.

From concept to cabinetry

According to Kitchenette Director Rob Paul, the floating kitchen concept evolved organically. “I spoke to my business partner (Kitchenette’s lead designer), and I said, “In bathrooms, you have these vanities that float off the ground. Why don’t we try to do a kitchen like that?” recalls Rob.

The result is a stunning, wall-mounted kitchenette system that creates a sense of space in the kitchen with optional appliances and ample storage. “The first time I saw it, I thought, this looks stunning,” says Rob. “I’ve shown it to a number of people prior to the launch, and I get the same reaction every time; it’s a real ‘wow’ moment.”

What’s not to love: pre-assembled, bespoke and installed within the hour

Floating cabinetry is more than just a design trend; it changes the perception of space within a room. “There’s a feeling of spaciousness that’s hard to describe,” notes Rob. “You get a sense of openness that doesn’t exist with traditional floor model kitchens or kitchenettes.

Kitchenette’s innovative pre-wired and pre-plumbed products are a New Zealand-first flat-pack alternative that merges designer appeal with swift and stress-free installation. For multi-unit developments, boutique accommodation, and urban compact homes, it’s an efficient, turnkey solution.

Although Rob emphasises, these aren’t cookie-cutter solutions. While a wide range of standard models are available, the company prides itself on flexibility.

“If you want a stainless steel or stone benchtop — absolutely, just give us a call,” he says.

Each standard and floating kitchenette features premium fittings such as Mercer and Acero sinks, optional appliances such as Robinhood cooktops, rangehoods, dishwashers and Panasonic microwaves. Additional drawers, cupboards, internal storage and even wood grain cabinetry are all available.

The entire system is engineered to be installed within an hour on-site (larger units may take longer), making it a perfect solution for projects with tight timelines or remote site access.

Designed for specifiers

While the floating kitchenette is the current star, Kitchenette’s designer models remain integral to the business. “Our standard or typical size ranges from 1.2 metres to 3.6 metres, however, we offer larger sizes and flexible solutions to complement your needs for larger projects”.

Shipping is available nationwide through a freight network covering even the most remote areas of New Zealand, with the company eyeing further expansion. Rob remarks, “Bathroom and laundry vanities with sinks and tapware pre-installed? Yes, that’s on its way.”

For architects and designers working on tiny homes, eco-retreats, or high-spec apartments, the floating kitchenette offers a way to bring a minimalist, high-design aesthetic to small spaces, without compromising on quality or performance.

“This is about offering a point of difference,” says Rob. “Yes, it’s clever and fast to install. But more than anything, it just looks beautiful. And in this market, that matters.”
