Tasked with infusing new life and space into the aging estate while honouring its past, Madeline Blanchfield Architects embarked on a journey to seamlessly marry tradition with modernity, preserving the essence of Iririki while making room for a family of seven.
ArchiPro spoke with Kynton Krause, Managing Director of brick manufacturer Krause Bricks, which specialises in handcrafted and bespoke bricks, to discuss the influence of its Emperor brick in bespoke, rich Autumn tones on the resurrection of Iririki.
"Iririki is truly remarkable in the way it seamlessly merges modern and historical elements. It is fascinating how architects blend contemporary design with heritage aesthetics; I find their achievement truly beautiful. Madeline Blanchfield, one of Australia's premier architects, has certainly left her mark on this project," says Krause.
At the heart of this design story lies a commitment to restoration and retention. Recognising Iririki's status as a significant property in a conservation area, Madeline Blanchfield Architects unravelled the layers of time, peeling back later additions to reveal the noble bones of the original sandstone and brick structure. The result – a harmonious symphony of old and new, where heritage whispers tales of bygone eras, and contemporary elements breathe vitality into its veins.
“Madeline Blanchfield Architects specified the Emperor brick, a popular 390mm 45mm tall and 105mm wide linear brick, in an Autumn blend of reds, oranges and browns to complement the original standard-press red brick and sandstone façade,” says Krause. “The autumn blend complements the darker reds without overpowering them. Sandstone accents further enhance the heritage aesthetic, and the addition of a hit-and-miss wall adds contrast to the new Emperor linear-shaped bricks of the extension.”
Central to Madeline Blanchfield Architects' vision was creating a space that transcended mere functionality, embracing the ethos of energy, flow and proportion. Through strategic planning, the studio crafted expansive, light-filled interiors that beckoned its occupants to revel in moments of connection and joy. From intimate gatherings to bustling family life, every corner of Iririki was imbued with warmth and livability.
“Krause Emperor Bricks also feature inside the home, wrapping the walls of the common spaces with their earthy red and brown hues, creating a sense of warmth and calm,” says Krause.
“Central to the design of Iririki is the sweeping white spiral staircase—gatekeeper to the first floor, stopping guests in their tracks. An incredible focal point of the lounge space, the staircase's contrast against wall-to-wall bricks brings a hyper-modern touch to the space.”
[Emperor bricks] unique tonal blend and size add a fresh twist to traditional builds, and this project's location in Randwick further boosts its appeal to designers.
Krause explains the challenges the bricklayers faced on the Iririki project. “From a building perspective, one of the most complex elements would be the patio section, where they've used the bricks for a vaulted ceiling,” says Krause.
“The bricklayers have accomplished a phenomenal result, creating a striking visual feature from the interior.”
The new addition, a testament to thoughtful design, seamlessly integrates with the existing interior and exterior dwelling, paying homage to its lineage while carving its own narrative. Clad in singular red brick, the new extension symbolises strength and resilience, a silent guardian of Iririki's legacy. Yet, as one ventures deeper, intricate details begin to unfold.
“The juxtaposition of historic and modern architecture is key here. The specification of Emperor bricks in an autumn blend has harmonised with the existing heritage façade of standard red bricks and warm sandstone. The warm tones of reds, oranges, and browns complement the surroundings beautifully," says Krause.
Perhaps the true triumph lies not only in transforming a single residence but also in restoring a community treasure. Iririki demonstrates the enduring spirit of preservation in architecture with its revitalised façade, which enriches the streetscape and serves as a reminder of the profound connection between past, present, and future.
“We're proud to promote Emperor bricks, our flagship product, with this project. Its unique tonal blend and size adds a fresh twist to traditional builds, and this project's location in Randwick further boosts its appeal to designers,” says Krause.
As the sun sets over Iririki, casting a golden hue upon its rich tones, one cannot help but marvel at the resilience of heritage and the beauty of transformation. A grand abode where stories intertwine and memories linger, Iririki's legacy lives on—and reminds onlookers of architecture’s ability to transcend time and leave an indelible mark on the fabric of our local communities.
