Whether sitting pretty atop a cliff, looking out across a vast harbour, or nestled gently in leafy surrounds, a clever design can harness views from the comfort of our homes and connect us to nature

There are countless creative ways to take advantage of a stunning location, whether by establishing an intimate connection with the land or enabling a glimpse of the landscape from within the house. These breathtaking homes show how innovative architecture can allow you to experience the world beyond in all manner of ways.

Darkwood Residence by Cumulus Studio – Tamar Valley, Tasmania

Sitting peacefully in the wild Tamar Valley, Darkwood is a model of simplicity and tactility. Constructed using robust, sustainable materials, the house sits within the surrounding landscape rather than interrupting it. The result is a home that encourages its occupants to live at one with nature, rather than disconnected from it. Darkwood reflects utility – a folded roof lets the light flood in, while deep windows and a sheltered courtyard open to the valley beyond, from within the safety of the home.

Andy’s House by Robinson Architects – Coolum, Queensland

Andy’s House was designed with a clear intention in mind – to showcase the property’s glorious views of Mount Coolum. An expansive view of surrounding bushland can be glimpsed throughout the home, thanks to its elongated design and northeast orientation. The use of corrugated iron and rammed earth effortlessly assimilates the home into its rural context.

A rare and breathtaking coastal setting informed the design of Great Ocean Road Residence which sits on a cliff overlooking the vast ocean beyond.
