How to Choose Exterior House Colours
The Solution for Complex Curves
Milano Flex is engineered to bend, twist, and adapt to a wide range of curved profiles, both concave and convex. It eliminates the need for costly custom joinery or complicated workarounds when dealing with arches, domes, curved staircases, and rounded walls. Whether in timber-look finishes or paint-ready surfaces, Milano Flex maintains structural integrity without cracking or splitting, delivering both functionality and luxury.
For builders, this product drastically reduces installation time and costs. For architects and interior designers, it unlocks creative freedom - allowing them to incorporate curves without compromise.
For builders and designers, getting this choice right early avoids costly rework, ensures compliance, and delivers a healthier, more liveable space.
The Healthiest Appliance in the Kitchen
Cooking generates smoke, airborne grease, moisture, and harmful gases such as nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide. Without effective air extraction, these pollutants degrade indoor air quality, damage finishes, and can contribute to long-term respiratory issues.
A high-performance rangehood is the client’s first defence - removing contaminants, controlling humidity, and reducing the risk of mould and allergen build-up. More than an appliance, it is a critical investment in health and comfort.
Understanding wood veneer: more than just a pretty face
Wood veneer refers to thin slices of real wood that are bonded to a substrate like MDF or plywood. These veneer wood sheets allow you to achieve the look of expensive solid timber without the weight or expense of solid wood. The result? Stunning surfaces that bring natural beauty to any space.
At Woodsmiths, we work with two distinct veneer ranges that cater to different design needs and budgets. Each offers unique characteristics that can completely transform your interior spaces.
Before diving into the specifics, we recommend downloading our Latho Lookbook to browse the full collection.
Move collection: pressed perfection with pattern variety
The Move collection features pressed wood veneer with an impressive range of prints and patterns. These 3-dimensional embossed veneers provide fresh aesthetics and contemporary design possibilities that give architects and designers remarkable creative freedom.
What makes Move special?
- Extensive pattern library including geometric designs, natural textures, and even fabric-inspired finishes.
- Lighter weight than solid alternatives.
- Flexible installation options.
- Available in thicknesses from 1.2mm to 2.5mm for curved applications.
- Endless options in colour, material, and finish combinations.
The Move collection is priced at $360 - $450 per square metre (including GST) when applied to one face of 18mm MDF.
For a typical feature wall measuring 3m x 2.4m (7.2 square metres), you're looking at $2,590 to $3,240 for the Move collection. Kitchen accent panels covering around 4 square metres would range from $1,440 to $1,800.
Look and feel
Timber doors bring warmth and character that's hard to beat. Whether you're going for a classic country kitchen or a sleek contemporary design, solid wood adapts beautifully. Oak, walnut, pine, or exotic hardwoods each have their own personality. You can stain them to highlight natural grain patterns or paint them any colour you like. Plus, timber ages gracefully, developing a patina that adds to its charm.
Aluminium doors, meanwhile, offer a completely different aesthetic. They're clean, modern, and precise. The sleek profiles work particularly well in minimalist designs or industrial-style kitchens. While they don't have the organic warmth of wood, they create sharp, contemporary lines that many homeowners love.
When you touch them, the difference is immediately obvious. Timber feels warm and natural under your hand. Aluminium is cooler and has that smooth, manufactured feel. Neither is better or worse, just different.
Of course, you don't have to choose just one material. Many of our clients create stunning contrast by mixing both in their kitchen design, timber doors for main cabinets and aluminium doors for accent pieces like pantry doors or display cabinet doors on a bar area. This approach lets you enjoy the warmth of wood while incorporating modern aluminium elements for visual interest.
When restaurateurs Steven and Autumn Adams wanted to create a hospitality destination that challenged the status quo, they enlisted the team at Space Cubed Design Studio to transform a vacant, double-story venue into a whimsical dining experience inspired by their seafood-focused menu. Located in the Oracle Boulevard dining precinct in the beachside suburb of Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, Blowfish is the result of a relationship built on brave design decisions and creative thinking.
The impressive double-story venue seats 150 people in a range of dining spaces, from a pre or post-dinner drink at high tables, to an alfresco bite on the terrace amongst tropical plantings, or in the elevated main dining room with its theatrical open kitchen and freshly caught molluscs and crustaceans on display. Upstairs, guests can go on a full culinary journey in the private dining room, its double height void overlooking the main bar and connecting the two spaces.
Located in the Brisbane suburb of Ascot overlooking leafy canopies and, on a clear day, views to Moreton Bay, Palma’s interiors are pared back to match its subtropical location. Interiors breezily flow between the levels, double height spaces are washed in natural light, details include crafted off-form concrete and a sweeping sculptural staircase, and relaxed lounge areas seamlessly connect with the outside.
Ask Graya director Andrew Gray about the collaboration with Space and he enthuses about the role interiors play in all of their developments. ‘Interiors are critically important for us. Space is very well known for high-end residential, so they are a natural fit, and the Space Atelier team makes it an easy process because they have such a good eye.’ Working closely with the Graya design team on the Palma interiors, Space Atelier developed furniture plans for each of the levels featuring key designs by Italian brands Baxter, B&B Italia and Edra, detailed materials specifications across each collection, and delivery, installation and styling that brought it all together.

Kilmory House, one of the last grand estates in Point Piper, was originally conceived by architectural practice Mason & Pickering in 1913. When its new creative owners, who are also avid entertainers, enlisted Jillian Dinkel to usher the home into a new era, a deep reverence for its Arts and Crafts heritage became the foundation of the design. With an expert understanding of heritage and period homes, the designer saw herself as a custodian of the home’s history, weaving her own interpretation into its next chapter while reviving the residence’s golden ‘cinematic era.’ “The home was an exercise between balancing the Arts and Crafts traditional detailing and bringing in refined, contemporary elements that made each room feel like an experience unto itself,” Dinkel remarks.
Poliform’s kitchen collections — including Alea Pro, Artex, Shape, Alea, and My Planet — offer the ability to integrate stainless steel in ways that suit both lifestyle and the overarching design vision. Serving as a full kitchen island wrap, a sleek benchtop, or an understated accent, stainless steel is a distinctive material that transforms the kitchen into a space where form and function become one.
Hospitality is no longer just about serving food or pouring drinks. It’s about creating moments – memories designed to bring people together. The venues that resonate most with guests are those that prioritise connection: between people, between design and function, and between the atmosphere of a space and its practical demands.
For designers working in this space, the challenge is twofold. Hospitality interiors must carry the weight of constant use while maintaining a sense of refinement. They need to be flexible enough to adapt to shifting service models, seasonal needs and diverse group dynamics – all without compromising on style. This is where Bowermans positions itself as a trusted partner.
1. Functionality is Key
When it comes to selecting window furnishings, functionality is key. Sharlene Thompson, a residential consultant at Lahood, emphasizes the importance of considering how each room will be used.
“In bedrooms, where privacy and light control are crucial, blackout curtains—such as those lined with Lahood's Protection Plus range—offer optimal sleep quality. For high-traffic areas like living rooms, durable materials like polyester blends provide both longevity and style,” says Sharlene.
In moisture-prone areas such as bathrooms, Thompson recommends PVC venetian blinds or shutters for their easy care and resistance to mildew. “An in-home consultation is essential for perfect window treatments. We take care of everything—from precise measurements to selecting the right operating mechanism—to create a functional and beautiful solution for your space,” she adds.
In this blog, she takes us through the key differences between our Luxaflex® Roller Blinds and Luxaflex® Duette Shades (honeycomb blinds), so you can feel confident making the right choice for your home.

They also offer unique configurations, allowing for raising from the bottom or the top for versatile light and privacy control.

Endless Fabric Choices
One of the biggest appeals of Roman blinds is that they can be made from an endless variety of fabric designs and colours to suit most décors and personal tastes. Roman blinds can either blend discreetly into your existing décor or make a bold statement, resembling a work of art when lowered.
They can also be made from a wide range of fabric types from luxurious silks to natural linens and textured brocades. This variety allows you to choose the perfect material that not only complements your home but also reflects your personal taste.
Versatile Functionality for Any Room
Roman blinds aren’t just about looks - they’re incredibly functional too. In addition to their endless fabric choices, Roman blinds can be tailored to a wide range of window and door sizes plus meet the specific functional needs of each room in your home. Choose from varying degrees of blockout or thermal linings, depending on how much light, privacy, and warmth you require.
For bedrooms, we recommend our Armourguard blockout lining to create a restful, dark environment, perfect for sleeping. In spaces like dining rooms, a lighter lining such as Serenity allows for soft light diffusion, creating an inviting ambiance.
1. Precision and Care for a Flawless Finish
“Installing window furnishings might seem straightforward, but precision is everything,” Dave says. “Every window is different, and even a small mistake in measurement or alignment can affect how the blinds or curtains look and function.”
Whether it’s ensuring that curtains hang perfectly without dragging or that blinds are aligned with the window frame, accuracy is crucial. Lahood’s design consultants in conjunction with the installation team are trained to measure each window carefully, taking into account any unique features, such as uneven walls or irregular window shapes. The installation team also ensures that all essential safety features, like cord tensioners, are securely in place—an important step, especially in homes with children and pets.
The experience of a recent customer Michelle, underlines the importance of using professional installers:
“David, the installer was fantastic. We have a Villa so our walls were a bit out of line. David came up with a solution on how to best hang the rail so curtains and rail appear straight. He really cared and the end result is so good I can’t even tell! “ Michelle, Auckland
2. Guaranteed Peace of Mind after Installation
One of the major advantages of using Lahood’s in-house team is the peace of mind that comes with knowing the job is guaranteed to be done right. “We stand behind our work 100%,” Dave emphasises.
At Lahood, our goal is your complete satisfaction with the finished job. That means delivering exactly what we promise in our proposal to bring your vision to life. In the rare case that any aspect of the installation doesn’t meet the agreed specifications, we provide an unconditional guarantee to fix it- at no extra cost to you.
‘While it’s not something that happens often, customers are always pleasantly surprised by how quickly we return to resolve any issues,’ says Dave,
With our focus on quality materials and skilled personnel throughout manufacturing and installation, we confidently provide a 2-year guarantee on all workmanship giving you additional peace of mind.

At its heart hangs a treasured French trumeau oil painting, in gold and Aegean blues, depicting Zeus and Europa’s mythic love story. It’s a fitting emblem for Chrystelle and Nick, whose lives are steeped in the art and history of Europe. For four months each year they travel through France and Italy, often staying at their 15th century moulin home in Gironde, Bordeaux, sourcing antiques for their boutique and immersing themselves in the textures of old stone villages and centuries-old châteaux.
Their Remuera home, built in the 1930s by renowned architect Horace Massey, is designed in the pure Georgian style, elegant and restrained. Its weathered jarrah weatherboards, small-paned white windows, and terraced buxus, bay laurel and jasmine gardens lend the house a relaxed romance. The path to the arched entrance passes a 20th-century Danish armillary sphere sundial, setting the tone before you even cross the threshold.
Inside, the couple’s refined but eclectic taste takes centre stage. The formal lounge is a blend of centuries and styles; Louis XVI armchairs, a mid-century slate coffee table, an English Chesterfield sofa, and a 17th-century portrait of Philippe, Duke of Orléans (brother to Louis XIV) coexist effortlessly. A Line Vautrin convex mirror, designed by the French modernist dubbed “the poetess of metal,” reflects the flicker of firelight and the warm glow of evenings shared with friends.
The Federal Government’s target of delivering 1.2 million new homes within five years underscores the scale of demand facing the Australian construction industry. Achieving this will require the rate of apartment commencements to more than double, creating both pressure and opportunity for architects working in multi-residential design. Kitchens, as some of the most used spaces within these developments, represent a critical area where specification decisions directly affect building performance and long-term value.
In multi-residential settings, kitchens are subject to high levels of wear due to frequent use and tenant turnover, which place distinct demands on both durability and serviceability. For architects, this requires consideration that extends beyond initial aesthetics or functionality, recognising the long-term implications of product performance. Material and hardware specification plays a pivotal role in determining lifecycle costs, the ease of ongoing maintenance and the quality of the occupant experience over time.
Surfaces, cabinetry and joinery must be capable of resisting impacts, moisture and continuous use, while remaining compliant with the National Construction Code (NCC) and applicable Australian Standards. Hardware components such as hinges, drawer systems and fittings must reliably withstand repeated cycles, support accessibility requirements and allow for straightforward replacement when required. At the same time, specifications should account for sustainability credentials, local supply chains and whole-of-life outcomes, ensuring that kitchens perform effectively for both current occupants and future owners.
Economic pressures have accelerated the downsizing of kitchens in new dwellings, particularly in response to the steep rise in construction costs. Between 2019 and 2023, the cost of core materials such as timber, copper and structural steel surged by as much as 65%, driving up the overall cost of homebuilding. In response, both developers and renovators are reducing kitchen footprints and scaling back on premium features. The result is a shift toward cost-efficient materials, joinery and fittings, a phenomenon increasingly referred to as “shrinkflation.” Rather than pursuing expansive kitchen upgrades with high-end appliances, many homeowners are now prioritising essential functionality delivered through compact, adaptable design choices.
This shift has made space optimisation a critical design parameter rather than a secondary consideration. Architects are turning to smart hardware solutions, such as lift systems, pull-out mechanisms and concealed fittings, that enable more efficient use of available volume. At the same time, careful material selection is essential to ensure longevity and aesthetics, preserving the kitchen as the ‘heart of the home’. Together, these strategies support durable, multifunctional kitchen spaces within increasingly constrained footprints.
Understanding Kitchen Sizes and Layouts
Contemporary multi-residential developments in Australia are exhibiting a clear pattern in kitchen sizing that aligns with apartment typologies. The following size ranges represent common trends across new dwellings and reflect how spatial constraints are being addressed through increasingly efficient layouts and integrated design solutions.
In studio and one-bedroom apartments, kitchens typically range from 3 to 6 square metres. These microkitchens often adopt single-wall or narrow galley layouts, relying on compact appliances, minimal joinery and integrated hardware to maintain usability. Storage is generally limited to overhead and underbench cabinetry, with design emphasis placed on circulation and material durability. Despite their scale, these kitchens must support essential cooking functions while contributing to the overall sense of openness within the dwelling.
Two-bedroom apartments tend to feature kitchens between 6 and 9 square metres. While still compact, these layouts allow for more functional configurations such as L-shaped or expanded galley designs. Standard-sized appliances, modest pantry storage and greater bench space become feasible, supporting small families or shared living arrangements. Design priorities at this scale often focus on enhancing workflow, optimising lighting and selecting finishes that balance cost with resilience.
For three-bedroom apartments and larger, kitchen sizes typically range from 10 to 14 square metres or more. These kitchens are commonly open-plan and integrated with living and dining zones, with island or U-shaped layouts that enable higher storage capacity and promote social interaction.
Founded in 2007, Schweigen began by addressing one of the most overlooked issues in residential design: the noise and inefficiency of conventional rangehoods. Its solution - relocating the motor from earshot - redefined kitchen extraction.
The powerful yet silent Isodrive® Motor System remains Schweigen’s flagship technology.
The drive for thermal efficiency in modern homes has made them warmer and more airtight. But it comes with a downside. Without roof ventilation, sealed environments such as roof spaces are prone to unhealthy moisture build-up, often invisible, yet potentially damaging over time.
Masons’ Passive Roof Ventilation System offers a straightforward solution using natural airflow to keep roof spaces dry and homes healthier.
An old idea, rediscovered
‘Roof ventilation is one of those things we used to install as standard practice,’ explains Masons’ Technical Manager Arthur Whitfield. ‘You can see the gable-end vents on bungalows and state houses. But at some point, it was dropped, and the industry is only now returning to it, especially in light of the thicker layers of insulation required as part of H1 regulations. Modern long-run roofs are much more airtight than older roofs, with little air movement or ventilation possible. This can lead to substantial condensation inside the roof space once the roof and underlay reach the dew point as the air temperature outside cools.
‘Trapped moisture in unventilated roofs can lead to excessive condensation under the building paper, potentially dripping water onto the insulation and the roof framing. It’s a slow and gradual process, as moisture-laden air from the living rooms below slowly migrates through the plasterboard ceiling to enter the roof space. This can cause mould to form – a risk to both building performance and occupant health.
‘Thicker batts are reducing airflow even further in roof spaces, and if we don’t keep them dry, we undermine their performance – wet insulation does not reach the projected R values.’
To address this on his own bach build at Cooks Beach, builder Darryl Knowles turned to Masons’ ventilated roofing products: Insul-Baffle and Ventilated Roof Battens, along with VHP Value Roof Underlay. These products are designed to maintain airflow while supporting thicker insulation, helping builders meet code without compromising roof performance.

A Professional’s Guide to Gutter Cleaning Prices and Savings
Gutter cleaning is one of those essential property maintenance tasks that’s easy to forget-until you’re dealing with overflowing gutters, water damage, or even a pest infestation. At Gutter Guard Direct we work with professional gutter cleaners who have spent years on rooftops across Australia, they have seen just how critical regular gutter cleaning is for both homeowners and businesses. The cost to clean gutters can vary widely depending on your property type, location, and how much debris you’re dealing with.
Why Gutter Cleaning is Essential
Blocked gutters are more than a minor nuisance-they can cause:
- Water damage: Overflowing gutters can lead to leaks, rotting fascia boards, and even structural damage to your home or business.
- Pest infestations: Stagnant water and built-up debris attract mosquitoes, rodents, and birds, which can nest in your gutters.
- Fire hazards: In bushfire-prone areas, dry leaf litter in gutters is a major ignition risk.
- Roof deterioration: Prolonged blockages can accelerate rust and decay on metal roofs and gutters.
This isn’t just a residential issue-commercial buildings are equally at risk, with blocked gutters potentially leading to costly repairs and business interruptions.
Quick Tip:
If you notice water spilling over the sides during rain, plants growing in your gutters, or visible sagging, it’s time for a clean.
Gutter Cleaning Procedures – What’s Involved
Professional gutter cleaning is more than just scooping out leaves. Here’s what a typical service includes:
- Safety setup: Secure ladders, harnesses, and safety gear are essential, especially on multi-storey buildings.
- Manual debris removal: Clearing leaves, mud, and nests by hand or with specialised tools.
- Flushing downpipes: Using hoses to ensure water flows freely through downpipes and away from your property.
- Gutter inspection: Checking for leaks, sagging, or damage that could lead to future problems.
- Clean-up: Removing all waste from your site, leaving no mess behind.
- Optional add-ons: Roof inspections, minor repairs, and gutter guard checks can often be included for an extra fee.
How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned?
The frequency depends on your environment - General guideline: 2–4 times per year.
Factors that increase frequency:
- Lots of nearby trees (especially eucalyptus or pine)
- Tropical or storm-prone climates
- Bushfire regulations (clear gutters before fire season)
- Commercial properties with large roof areas or nearby vegetation.
1. Preventing Gutter Blockages and Overflow
One of the primary functions of gutter guards is to prevent leaves, twigs and other debris from clogging your gutters. Clogged gutters can lead to water pooling on your roof or in heavy rainfall flowing back under the roof, both situations can lead to leaks, ceiling damage, or even compromise the structural integrity of your home. With a properly installed gutter guard system, water flows freely through the gutters, even during heavy rainfall.
Ember Attack Meaning: How It Puts Your Home at Risk
Embers are small but highly dangerous, as they can ignite dry leaves, debris, and other combustible materials around the home. Once these embers settle, they can quickly start secondary fires that spread to the main structure. Research shows that ember attack is responsible for the destruction of most homes in bushfires, often well before the main fire front arrives. This highlights the critical need for effective ember protection measures to safeguard homes.
Why Ember Protection Is Essential for Australian Homes
Much of Australia's climate and natural environment make it highly prone to bushfires, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. With increasing temperatures and longer fire seasons, homeowners who live in at risk areas need to take proactive steps to reduce fire risk. Installing ember guards on your gutters is a crucial part of a comprehensive bushfire protection strategy, helping to prevent ember intrusion and the resulting fires that can devastate homes.
2. How Ember Guards Work to Prevent Fire Damage
The Role of Fire Guard Gutter Guards in Bushfire Protection
Gutter guards designed for ember protection act as a physical barrier, preventing embers from entering roof gutters and cavities where dry leaves, debris, or combustible roofing materials could easily ignite. Without proper protection, embers can smolder unnoticed, potentially leading to structural fires. Ember gutter guards not only reduce the risk of embers reaching these vulnerable areas during a bushfire but also help minimize the buildup of flammable materials while allowing rainwater to flow freely, providing an added layer of safety for your home.
Ember Guard Mesh: A Critical Line of Defense
Ember guard mesh is a specially designed screening material that prevents burning embers from entering vulnerable areas. It is typically made from non-combustible, corrosion-resistant metals and features fine apertures (2mm or smaller) that block even the smallest embers. This mesh can be installed over gutters, vents, and gaps in roofing structures, ensuring that no entry points remain unprotected.

From a simple, neutral space to a bold and refined retreat, this before-and-after is proof of how much impact our panels can make. The Jet Black finish brings a sleek, modern look while improving acoustics and adding texture to the room.

Where It All Began: A Creative Spark From Childhood
Tim’s love affair with interiors began long before Hipwell Haus came to life.
“I was one of those kids who wanted to redesign their own bedroom growing up,” Tim recalls. “I remember going to a furniture store and choosing a designer dining chair for my study desk instead of a regular office chair. I was so proud of that choice!”
That early eye for form, function and flair has evolved into a global design career spanning two decades, with his work featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, and Living among others. Today, Tim is not only a sought-after stylist and design educator but also the visionary behind The Styling Department, his online classroom for up-and-coming creatives.

In a staged process, this home has been reimagined and renovated so that every single area is now used to its full potential, making maximum use of each space. They’re currently working on a large renovation of a century-old countryside home with a well-known architect.
The challenge
Design and deliver an elegant solution for a high-end kitchen as part of a private residential build in Plimmerton, Wellington.
The architect and client were committed to a sleek aesthetic with minimal distractions so that users could enjoy the outstanding setting with its expansive sea views. To maximise this aspect, they wanted a kitchen that slotted into a rather narrow space, yet which still incorporated a number of different zones that could be opened up and closed off as user needs determined.

Designed to address the critical concern of accidental overflows in bathrooms and wetrooms, JESANI's drainage channels are leaders in prevention. However, when tasked with setting up a school environment, the focus shifted to including security protocols. The plans specified the installation of JESANI door and vinyl clamping shower channels with securely locked grilles to ensure student and faculty safety and prevent deliberate flooding.
As a result, each grille features a unique security screw system, limiting access to the trough and drainage outlet to authorised personnel only. This is crucial for safety due to the solid stainless steel construction of the grille. With the security feature in place, JESANI channels boast a virtually unblockable configuration, thwarting attempts at obstruction.

Which Tile Colours are Timeless?
Creating a timeless look in the home is ideal, especially when choosing fixed items that cannot be replaced as easily as your home décor and furnishings. Choosing a selection of timeless tile colours in your next project will allow for a luxurious look that is always on trend while also offering you the freedom to experiment with a variety of different trending colours or patterns in your decorative pieces such as soft furnishings and home décor.
Generally, sticking with simple and elegant neutral tones when choosing your new tiles will help you create a rich and timeless aesthetic in the home. These include: white tiles, beige or light cream, soft greys and modern charcoal tones. Each of these luxurious neutral colours will create a sophisticated and earthy look in the home, with each being easily paired with a range of different brighter colours in your home’s decorating scheme to create a more personal and unique touch.
In choosing an earthy look for the home, you have the opportunity of experimenting with a vast range of neutral tones and textures that can be layered throughout each space to create a strong sense of tranquillity. Neutral tones and colour options will usually include soft charcoals, warm whites, beige, taupe or soft browns, each of which can easily be paired with a selection of bolder colours to allow you the opportunity to experiment with a range of different looks. In this post, we explore a selection of our latest tile collections, focusing on options to suit an earthy look in the home that will create a sense of tranquillity and relaxation.
An Earthy Look for Modern & Contemporary Homes
Modern interior design and architecture will often combine a selection of contrasting tones or colours to create a unique touch that allows for your chosen materials and finishes to be the star of the show. Deep charcoal tones are often paired with lush neutrals, layered with bolder colours that are used more sparingly throughout the home to create dynamic features. When choosing tiles for a more modern design where a warm and earthy look is desired, look for options that combine charcoal or white tones with a warmer beige, taupe or caramel colour. These types of tiles will instantly elevate the look of the space while also injecting the home with a rich and warm atmosphere.
Timeless Subway Tile Shapes
A staple of modern interior design, subway tiles actually have a long history! First introduced in the early 1900s, these tiles were initially created to be used as a hygienic wall finish in the subway stations of New York. These first subway tiles were a simple, small white rectangular shape however since then, subway tile designs have evolved to new heights. You can now find subway tiles in a rainbow of different colours as well as textures or finishes. Maintaining their classic rectangular shape, these tiles can be used to create a wide variety of different tile layouts or patterns from the timeless brick bond layout to a modern herringbone tile layout. Find out more about subway tiles in our blog Talking Tiles where we look at the many different options available, subway tile layout patterns and more!
Colourful Tile Options Inspired by Handmade Creations
Traditionally handmade tiles will show luxurious variations in colour and texture from one tile to the next. When combined, these stunning tiles will create a rich and tactile patchwork effect that will bring any interior design scheme to life! As can be expected of a handcrafted product, these types of tiles can fetch a higher price tag. As such, authentic handmade tiles are often used in restricted applications (such as kitchen splashbacks or bathroom feature walls) in order to ensure projects stay on budget. For projects that require a large amount of tiles, handmade-look tiles will offer the next best solution. These types of tiles are machine made however, they are specifically designed to emulate the look and feel of an authentic handmade tile, offering this luxurious designer look at a different price point. You will find an enormous selection of both handmade and handmade-look tiles available, each offering its own unique range of bright and vivid colour options, elegant textures and stunning patterns!
Indoor and Outdoor Tiles: What’s the Difference?
When shopping for tiles, it is important to take note of each product’s specifications in order to ensure they will be the most suitable choice for your intended application. While certain tiling solutions can be used in outdoor spaces, there are certain options that are best avoided. While there are many different tile materials that can be used in outdoor spaces, the key difference between indoor and outdoor tiles is in their surface finish and in the material’s ability to withstand the harsher environment of being outdoors (i.e. rain, frost, sunlight, etc.)
Timeless Tile Designs for Outdoor Spaces
Outdoor tiles are often used to create pathways or to define key zones in and around your home’s garden. Outdoor tiles are available in a wide selection of different formats or tile shapes, as well as a vast range of different materials. From natural stone tiles to terracotta tiles, concrete tiles and even terrazzo tiles, you will find an endless array of luxurious options available to suit a variety of applications in your home’s outdoor design scheme! Porcelain tiles are perhaps the most popular solution of all thanks to their impressive low maintenance qualities. Unlike natural stone or concrete pavers for example, porcelain tiles are almost completely non-porous and will not require sealing in order to be best protected over time. These tiles will offer a surface finish that is resistant to staining, scratching, heat and water, making them one of the most suitable solutions for busy homes.
Varieties of Natural Tiles & How to use them in the Home
Natural stone tiles are available in a wide variety of luxurious options including stylish decorative wall tiles, elegant and classic mosaic tiles and stylish floor tiles. Each of these tile options are suitable for different applications throughout the home’s interior and exterior applications. Varieties of natural stones that are most commonly used for tiling include: different types of marble such as Calacatta, Nero Marquina, New York Marble or Carrara Marble, Granite, Slate, Limestone and Travertine tiles. Each of these luxurious materials is available in a variety of striking, naturally occurring colours and patterns, allowing for a diverse colour scheme in your next design project.
What are Terracotta Tiles?
A traditional tiling option, terracotta tiles are created using a combination of iron rich clays. The tiles are formed and then baked in a kiln at temperatures ranging from 300 – 500 degrees Celsius. When fired, the high iron content of the tiles create the rich, rusty-red tone that these tiles are so well known for. Terracotta tiles are available in a wide range of different shapes, sizes and styles with options to suit both wall and floor applications, allowing for a versatile design solution that can be used throughout your home.
While you may think that antiseptic wipes or sprays are necessary to kill germs (bacteria and viruses) on most surfaces like stainless steel and plastics. There's a metal that kills germs on contact, no cleaning supplies necessary.
Copper has unique antimicrobial properties, meaning it can kill microorganism like bacteria and viruses without any assistance. These microorganisms must come in direct contact with copper for it to be killed. This is referred to as 'Contact Killing'.
The process involves the release of copper ions (electrically charged particles) when microbes, transferred by touching, sneezing or vomiting, land on the copper surface. The ions prevent cell respiration, punch holes in the bacterial cell membrane, or disrupt the viral coat, and destroy the DNA and RNA inside. This property disrupts cellular function and is important as it means that no cell mutation can occur also preventing the microbe from developing a resistance to copper.
Copper does not care about cell mutations its natural defense continues regardless...
