Expert decorating tips and advice for creating a maximalist scheme in a small-scale environment.

One of the most common pieces of decorating advice for small spaces is that you should keep your colour scheme neutral to ensure the space feels larger. However, not everyone likes a neutral palette, nor do all those who enjoy a maximalist scheme bursting with colour, pattern and personality have a large home. While using an abundance of bold hues and prints can be overwhelming when done incorrectly, that isn’t to say it can’t be done at all.

Meet the expert

Caroline Touzeau is an interior designer and stylist, and the founder of her eponymous studio, Caroline Touzeau Design. Known for her ability to curate unique interiors that reflect the personality of her clients, Caroline has some excellent advice for adding colour and pattern into a small room or space. “The number one mistake I see people make is mixing too many shades of colours,” says Caroline. “If you enjoy colour, mix them in the same tones, such as autumn tones or pastel tones. Soft pastels are my favourites, such as pink, lemon, peach, baby blue, mint, lavender and soft greys.”

How to incorporate colour

Caroline recommends using art and decorative items as a method of delivery for colour in petite areas. “This isn’t to say I wouldn't put a soft colour on the walls or furniture, as that can create an illusion of space.” However, she advises against using colours such as brown, deep purple or dark red as this can be too heavy for compact rooms.

How to incorporate pattern

Caroline further explains that the use of prints and patterns can actually make a room feel larger, it all comes down to the pattern you pick. “Stripes, tree trunks, geometrics and 3D patterns will help as long as you select the correct scale. That is, not too oversized,” says Caroline. “The introduction of wallpaper can also make an area feel spacious, depending on its pattern.” And when it comes to layering colour and pattern, Caroline suggests grouping your colour tones together and keeping the scale of your patterns similar.
