The terracotta products in particular are porous and absorb water which can make them prone to cracking in freezing conditions. Sealing will reduce the potential for this to occur. It will also minimise the development of white salts due to water seeping through the sides of the pot or planter and drying on the outside and protect the product from staining due to plant, soil or fungal contact.
We recommend using the Peter Fell product range that includes glaze, satin, acrylic and natural finishes. Their PFL Natural Sealer is a good option to retain the original look of the product . The glaze and satin sealers will create a ‘wet look’ finish which will intensify the colour and product detail.
These sealant products form a cross-linked matrix below the product surface so there is no surface film that will peel or wear off. Recoating can be undertaken every few years if required and we recommend use of the PFL Surface Condition which is used as a primer when re-coating existing surfaces.
All products come in 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20L pack sizes. Test pots can also be ordered on-line and we recommend testing the sealant product you choose on a small area of your product to ensure you are happy with the final finish.
All products should be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s specification or recommendations.
