From European oak to matte finishes, sustainable choices and laying patterns, discover the top trends for premium-looking wooden floors.

Timber floors are one of the most high-end aesthetics you can achieve in flooring, but with so many timber choices, laying patterns and finishing options to choose from, it can be difficult to know how to achieve the premium look seen in architecturally designed interiors.

While traditional wood flooring and finishing is still commonplace, often the cost of installing solid timber floors is prohibitive and the range of options available in engineered flooring means you can create a high-end look without the price tag.

“Engineered timber flooring has taken over the market,” shares Bespoke Wooden Floors director Daran Dickinson. “It can be installed in apartments a lot easier than solid timber, it is more stable than solid timber and less labour is required to install it as there is no sanding or coating required.”

In line with this, Daran is seeing a range of design trends in engineered timber flooring emerging, including specific laying patterns, popular timber varieties, and new applications.

Here Daran shares the six latest trends in timber floors that architects and builders are specifying in their interiors.

Engineered timber floors in a herringbone pattern lay are a leading trend.
  1. Engineered European oak

Bringing lightness and authenticity into interiors has been a key change in recent years – moving away from the dark-toned timber trend of the past. In line with this, Daran is seeing engineered European oak becoming specified for many premium interiors, and it’s not just because of the gorgeous, rustic character of the boards.

“European oaks are an engineered board and they can be stained any colour, which means they can be adapted to fit any interior style, while still maintaining that charming look.”

2. Timber flooring up the walls

In both modern homes and commercial spaces, natural wood finishes are being embraced in flooring, walls and ceilings, creating interiors that are warm and inviting. This is partly due to design trends and partly due to innovations in technology, shares Daran.

“Due to engineered flooring being better manufactured we are seeing it being used in applications like walls, ceilings, and furniture.”

3. Matte finishes

Stains and finishes play a big role in enhancing the look and durability of timber flooring, but with so many options available, the choice can be overwhelming. Daran says Bespoke Wooden Floors can guide clients with their choice, and offer advice on which stain will make the grain of the wood stand out more.

But there is one consistent trend he’s seeing across timber flooring finishes: “Most finishes used today are a matte which gives the floor a durable surface and is easy to look after.”

4. Sustainable flooring choices

Much like every other material used in building, clients are demanding options that are environmentally sustainable. When it comes to flooring, Daran says to look for materials that are PEFC-certified by the manufacturer.

A PEFC-certified timber comes from a forest that is managed in line with the strictest environmental, social and economic requirements. PEFC certification allows manufacturers to track the timber from the final product back through the supply chain to the original forest it was cut from.

5. Timber laid in patterns

Timber flooring has been used creatively in patterns for centuries, with some laying patterns dating back to the 17th century becoming popular again.

“Most of the flooring we are installing at the moment are engineered oak, in herringbone and  chevron, which are becoming more and more popular again,” shares Daran. “Brass inlays are also coming back in style.”

These patterns can be easily achieved in many engineered timber options and Bespoke Wooden Floors can install a border around the perimeter.

Looking ahead, Daran says he expects to see flooring referencing the rustic character and authenticity of the past centuries becoming more and more popular.
