Making the roofers’ job easier with new-technology VHP underlay

VHP Maxi Roofing Underlay from Masons is used on a residential project in Hastings by Benson Brothers Construction.

‘We have been using Masons UNI Building Wrap for years,’ says director Mike Benson. ‘So when Masons gave us some sample rolls of their new VHP Roof Underlay, we trialled it and the roofers love it.’

At 220 gsm, VHP Maxi is the heaviest in the VHP range. ‘It was quicker to lay than alternatives,’ says Mike. ‘It’s wider and slightly more rigid than others, so easier to handle and roll out across the roof structure.’

As part of Masons’ breathable building wrap system, VHP roofing underlay brings excellent moisture management to the whole building envelope. Constructed in three layers – a highly vapour-permeable, water-resistant membrane sandwiched between two tough layers of non-woven polyolefin fabric – VHP helps to control condensation inside, while channelling water away to the exterior. And because the whole VHP range is fire retardant, it can be used in almost all situations, giving the roofer complete confidence where it goes. VHP combines high performance with competitive pricing – as little as $300 extra for an average house compared to black paper.

For Mike, anything that makes his roofers’ job easier is a bonus. ‘VHP is slightly translucent, and with the paper edged with the logo, the team could also see where laps were going, making it’s easier to line up.’

All VHP underlays are pH neutral, ensuring they will not react with treated timber, and are compatible with all roofing materials. The range is Codemark-certified. The VHP system complies with and exceeds all the provisions of External Moisture Clause E2 of the New Zealand Building Code.

VHP is currently available in three grades – Strong, Ultra and Maxi – each able to support its own weight over 1200mm. It does not always require netting (depending on roof pitch and rafter span) and is rated for up to and including Extra High wind zones.
