NATURAL LIGHTING IN THE HOME

More and more we desire more of the outside inside the home. We want less artificial light and more airflow in our spaces; we have abundant greenery throughout. Our entertainment areas are the heart of the home and we crave the natural feel of the outdoors within them. Our bedroom and bathroom spaces need to be well-ventilated, bright and airy. Even a dark and moody aesthetic requires great lighting and airflow so as not to be stuffy and gloomy.

So how do you increase natural lighting within the home?

There are many ways that we choose to incorporate here at Birdblack Design. First cab off the rank would be skylights. Specifying and installing skylights is a genius choice. Check out the skylights at ‘Grenache Residence’. There is nothing quite like standing in your own Kitchen with gorgeous blue skies overhead, and the very tops of the surrounding bushland.

Now perhaps you have milky white skin and you risk getting sunburnt through the skylights, never fear! Install block-out blinds on the skylights to protect from the midday sun if needed. The image below shows the blinds in full effect.

In the Bathroom or Laundry, you may do well to install a highlight window. A highlight window is generally a long window spanning the width of the wall where height may be lacking. This is a brilliant way to maximise light where the wall is quite short.

Pair the highlight window with another skylight over the bath and then you’re really talking abundant natural light bouncing through the space! In the evening, you can stargaze whilst enjoying a soak in the tub, sipping on your favourite glass of red wine. Delightful living.

Back to the Kitchen and let’s add in some function as well with a gas-strut servery window to make it easier to pass drinks and platters of food out to your guests in the Alfresco Dining Area and Outdoor Lounge. This also allows another huge window to be installed, flooding your Kitchen with all that luscious daylight.

From the outdoors, the servery window is so inviting so that guests don’t ever feel like they are segregated from the action inside. Pop some barstools by the window and you have a pop-up bar for guests to sit at!

Finally, another great way to allow natural light to penetrate the home is to have bifold glass doors moving from the inside, outdoors. Instead of choosing timber doors or metal doors, choose clear glass which opens up to create a lovely flow of zones within the home.
