Here in Aotearoa, lifeguards are integral not only to our safety but also to Kiwi culture. Te Pae Surf Life-saving Tower is somewhat of a gift to these extraordinary volunteers; a place to retreat from the West Coast's unrelenting weather and a stage to watch after the beach's visitors.
The tower’s spiral staircase, protected by the circular precast concrete.
Te Pae's dark, mottled concrete sits beautifully within the wider landscape.
In direct sunlight, you can clearly see the beautiful textural variance expressed by the concrete’s black oxide.
The tower's operable windows, providing protection from the coastal winds.
