Office lighting gets a makeover

When architectural interior design company Gaze Commercial approached Bright Light about an exciting new office fitout in Christchurch, they were intrigued to understand more about the project.

Accountancy firms aren’t traditionally known for their design-led spaces, but Grant Thornton were looking to differentiate themselves. The team at Gaze Commercial worked diligently with a range of professionals to design and create a fresh, yet cohesive space.

“They wanted something a bit different to the standard office lighting,” says Bright Light's David Powley. “Whether it’s a circle, a hexagon, or a star fitting, customers are wanting to make a feature of their lighting and do something unique.”

In Grant Thornton’s case, they wanted lighting that would provide adequate light for their employees in the reception space, but that gave it a dynamic energy.

They chose to go with a collection of staggered ceiling mounted LED linear lights in the shape of a hexagon. The pattern is mimicked in the carpet tiling below, and these simple repeated shapes give the effect of energising the space.

The luminaires were designed to have a matte black powder-coat, which contrasts against the white ceiling and light illumination, giving them a bold, modern look.

“It creates a real feature of the lighting, rather than recessing the lighting into the ceiling, which is a more traditional way of lighting an office,” says David.

Bright Light has an in-house facility for cutting and joining LED linear light strips to make those custom sizes and shapes. The service includes the powder-coating and all finishing aspects as well, says David.

“This means there’s choice out there, whether you want a custom colour or shape, it will make your project different to the others.”

Because Bright Light is based in New Zealand, customisation isn’t difficult. The local design team works with clients and uses 3D software to help the client visualise the design, before it’s put into production.   

Bright Light are able to create any custom profile. They can take any measurement, angle, colour of fitting, colour of light and implement a bespoke solution that enhances a space.

Recently, they installed a 10-plus metre zigzag linear LED light that weaved its way through an office space. “We can do anything of that scale,” says David. “The only limit is your imagination.”

Crucial to creating the slick looking feature lighting is attention to detail, and because Bright Light can customise everything in-house, their attention to detail is second-to-none. This means there aren’t any gaps in the joins, so the light doesn’t bleed, like some lesser quality product.

Another bonus to the locally manufactured lighting? That typical six to 12 week lead time is eliminated. “It’s a local team that produces our product and the New Zealand factor has benefits!” says David.

This includes a very hands-on after service – the team is always readily available for maintenance or follow up.
