Paper art: designer wallpapers

For situations where an interior design is targeted at a particular niche or current trend in retail or commercial settings, and where permanence is not a feature, designer wallpapers are becoming the decor of choice. The original prints and unique designs are coveted by many in this sector to create beautiful eye-catching features.

In the home, the same applies. Designer papers are often chosen to create a feature wall or provide a unique element to modernise or characterise a room.

At the moment, the most popular styles are those that mimic – almost indistinguishably in many cases – a natural material. “Timber-strip papers are incredibly popular at the moment,” Paper Room’s Bronwyn McAllister says.

“One of our ranges by a Dutch designer, the NLXL range, offers a large selection of timber strip papers with negative detailing. They’re digitally printed and photographic quality so much so that you often see people going up to touch a wall because it’s so realistic.”

The benefit of using wallpaper that mimics a natural material is often the cost, as well as the ability to easily update the area in the future.

It is, perhaps, because of this foresight of design that people are also favouring distinctive custom-made mural options in wallpaper. “These murals are one large image custom-printed to fit the space so there is no wastage and they fill the space exactly,” Bronwyn says.

Paper Room has a large range of images to choose from in their custom-mural selection. “People often choose these for bedrooms and feature walls in living spaces and children’s bedrooms. They’re also great for commercial spaces to create a dramatic effect. Akin to selecting a piece of art, custom-made mural wallpaper is a bold choice but one that can create some of the most visually appealing spaces.

Copper tile and marble-look papers are also on-trend at the moment, as is a more 1950s mid-century modern look, with lots of palm trees and tropical themes evident in the latest designs. Geometric shaped prints with repeatable patterns are also being favoured currently, creating bold statements when used.
