Strol was able to work closely with the developers of the space, Winton, on creating the entryway to Ayrburn, ensuring it strikes the perfect balance of luxury as visitors walk in and functionality as the cars and weather roll in.
ArchiPro spoke with Jethro Boakes, Strols General Manager and Project Specialist, about Strols permeable paving range and how SurePave helped achieve the grandeur of Ayrburn's entranceway. We also explore their array of innovative permeable paving solutions, a great option for your next project.
Ayrburn's Vision and How SurePave Helped Achieve It
Ayrburn's luxurious and rugged surrounding landscape was an essential element to bring into the design, and Winton desired the sound of pebbles underfoot to emanate this exact feeling.
The chosen pebbled finish was the perfect way to bring this brief to life, adding textural depth and a sophisticated visual interest to the entrance, with the pebbles naturally catching and diffusing light as the sun moves throughout the day.
Pebble finishes are also a great option for the high-traffic areas where it was used in this project, such as the car park and pathways, being excellent at hiding any wear and tear and ensuring that the surface looks pristine for years and years to come.
This is why SurePave was the right option for Ayrburn—designed to reinforce grass, gravel and decorative stone in high-traffic areas through gravel-lock technology; its robust cellular design promised no sacrifice to durability whilst it embraced aesthetics, essential for Ayrburn's overall design. This design also means that Ayburn's chosen white pebbles are locked into place, and even when nature happens, and the pebbles move, achieving the look that you get when it’s first installed is as simple as sweeping them back into place with a hard-bristled broom.
SurePave also helps the pebbles maintain a flat, stable surface no matter the weather, and due to the harsh elements of Central Otago, the weather was a big part of the brief, ensuring that whatever material was used would withstand whatever the South Island region threw at it—this is where SurePave’s permeable aspect comes into play, allowing the water to soak into the surrounding soil and help the plants grow as opposed to rushing off traditional hard surfaces such as concrete, minimising erosion and maximising protection for the gardens.
Strols commercial-grade permeable paving solutions are designed to bring the advantages of traditional concrete methods to your landscaping project but without the maintenance and the environmental footprint, as well as being easy to install.
SmartPave is a residential grade, cost-effective permeable paving solution, perfect for simple projects at home, such as building your patios, driveways, paths, courtyards and more. Made in New Zealand and recyclable, it’s built with the same environmental considerations as SurePave, but instead is built with a honeycomb cell design and geotextile backing, meaning that stones don’t move as much, so a firm, flat pavement is maintained.
“It’s also a great DIY option, being really easy to install,” explains Jethro. “From a design perspective, it also breaks up spaces really nicely if you have a lot of concrete already.”
Creating the entranceway to Ayrburn shows the versatility of Strols permeable paving solutions and stands as a testament to the design that seamessly balances functionality with understated luxury. SurePave and SmartPave offer practical, environmentally-conscious alternatives to traditional hardscaping, minimising maintenance without compromising on design. From large-scale to simple residential projects, Strols range will enhance the natural landscape and promise that upkeep is as simple as getting out the broom.
