Home security is something we all want to prioritise, but sometimes clunky passcode door handles and overly obvious security cameras seem a little…much.

Auckland-based, New Zealand-owned and operated company Framework Doors has combatted this conundrum head-on, offering a chic, sleek alternative to home security without sacrificing the aesthetics of your carefully curated exterior. This is all without mentioning that they allow you to keep your doors open through the seasons!

We sat down with Nick Kelly, Founder of Framework Doors, to uncover the inspiration behind his innovative designs, how his doors bring beauty and functionality to homes and the meticulous process of creating “forever doors” for forever homes.

Read our Q&A below.

Q: What inspired Framework Doors to focus on transforming how people interact with their homes through door design?

A: The inspiration for Framework came from personal experience. My wife and I lived in a terrace house in Sydney, Australia, with a door that seamlessly connected our indoor and outdoor spaces, and we were immediately drawn to it, especially as it also maintained a sense of security and privacy all at once.

As dog owners, we discovered its practical benefits too—opening the main door while keeping the security door closed gave our overly enthusiastic American Staffies a chance to “meet” guests (and vice versa) before anyone actually entered the home. These experiences made us realise that a door could be more than a utility; it could enhance your lifestyle. That belief is the heart of Framework Doors: creating doors that combine beauty, security and connection.

Q: Security is a significant focus for you—how do you ensure that your doors offer both aesthetic appeal and safety for families?

A: Our overarching belief is that security doesn't need to come at the expense of aesthetics. Our approach begins with robust construction and high-quality steel—we utilise strong, durable frames and incorporate features like deadbolt locking systems and reinforced steel to create a formidable barrier against intrusion.

We also believe in the power of deterrence: a door that exudes strength and sophistication can be a powerful deterrent in itself. The philosophy referred to as "target hardening" recognises that opportunistic burglars are less likely to target a home with visible security measures. However, target hardening doesn't have to mean sacrificing beauty. We are passionate about elevating the aesthetics of security doors, moving beyond the purely functional to create designs that are both visually striking and reassuringly robust, and we believe that a secure home can also be a beautiful one—our doors are a testament to that belief.

Q: What does your collaboration process look like with architects, interior designers, builders and homeowners?

A: My approach to collaboration definitely draws from my background in advertising and film production. As a producer, I learned the power of bringing together the very best people with diverse expertise to achieve a shared vision, and this philosophy is at the heart of how we work with architects, interior designers, builders, fabricators, engineers and homeowners. We believe in open communication and active listening—we ask questions, seek input and foster a collaborative environment where ideas can evolve and different learnings can be reapplied.
There are many different ways to tackle a particular problem, so keeping an open mind is probably the main way I try to conduct myself.

Q: Can you tell us about your commitment to quality, particularly your aim of providing “forever doors” for “forever homes”?

A: We aspire to craft "forever doors" for "forever homes" – doors that transcend trends and become cherished elements of a home's identity for generations. We use high-quality materials and robust fabrication techniques to ensure they can withstand the test of time. We believe a door should not be a fleeting fixture but a lasting investment that enhances a home's value and appeal for years to come.

We strive for universal design. Our doors are carefully crafted to complement a wide range of architectural styles and personal tastes. They are adaptable and enduring, ensuring they remain relevant and beautiful through changing trends.

We are also deeply committed to local manufacturing. As a proudly Made in New Zealand certified company, we craft our steel doors right here in Aotearoa. This allows us to support local communities and industries, minimise our environmental impact, and uphold the legacy of New Zealand innovation and craftsmanship.
