Refined industrial chic immersed in a Bay of Islands vista

The stone and timber new-build home that’s devoted to eye-popping sea views in Paihia.
The house overlooking Paihia’s waterfront was built for a semi-retired couple. The pivot door is made from timber the homeowners had been saving. “We put a steel frame on it to stop it twisting because it’s so big,” says Alan Simpkin of Arcline Architecture. The homeowners requested a three-car garage, and the driveway required careful planning for vehicle movement as it exits to a narrow road on a hairpin bend.
The posts in the entry gallery were made from old tōtara trees. They have their own uplighting for night-time drama.
The wood for the inlay floor was sourced by the homeowner. The 13.5m doors were custom made by Optimal Windows. “They slide beautifully,” says Alan. On the ceiling are pinpoint Laser Blade downlights by iGuzzini that reduce glare.
The ovens in the kitchen are by Miele and the fridge is by Samsung. With a glassware display cabinet, two dishwashers and a Vintec wine fridge, it's a house made for entertaining.
The house has four bedrooms, an office and three bathrooms. The couple’s son-in-law Kieran Pierce of pierceconstructionltd played a major role in the build and they credit his workmanship and attention to detail.

Care was taken to only use cedar cladding where it could be reached for easy maintenance, says Alan.
The panel in the eaves contains a retractable TV. The homeowner and an engineer friend made the mechanism using actuators. The deck next to the pool steps down to a conversation pit.
