The traditional approach to home building and design in Australia often overlooks crucial factors such as climatic conditions, high-value spaces, and individual family needs. As a result, many homes struggle to maintain a comfortable temperature and fail to effectively utilize space, leading to unnecessary expenses and compromised satisfaction for homeowners. At Cooper & Blake Architecture, we have pioneered a unique Holistic Home approach that addresses these concerns, ensuring a personalized, efficient, and sustainable living experience.

The Flaws in Traditional Approaches

The first major issue in traditional home design is the lack of focus on creating site-specific homes. A significant portion of homes in Australia are designed with little regard to their specific location, terrain, or climate. These properties may look aesthetically pleasing but often fail at providing the comfort and energy efficiency one expects from a well-designed home. By not considering the unique characteristics of a site, such as its orientation, microclimate, topography, and natural features, these homes struggle to make the most of the natural advantages they could have enjoyed. This oversight can lead to higher energy usage for heating, cooling, and lighting, and ultimately, higher utility bills for the homeowner.

The second prevailing issue within Australian home design is the 'more is more' mentality. Australia is known for having some of the largest homes globally, but the square metres of a house does not equate to better living. More often than not, these expansive floor plans result in underutilised or 'wasted' spaces. This trend is not only cost-ineffective but also unsustainable, as it leads to unnecessary consumption of resources.

Lastly, in today's digital age, we are flooded with images on social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, and heavily influenced by reality TV shows such as 'The Block.' This exposure often leads people to prioritize transient trends over their unique needs and preferences, with generic display homes becoming the norm. We tend to lose sight of what we truly value, instead opting for designs that garner praise from others. This creates a disconnect between the homeowner and their home, as the design doesn't necessarily reflect the lifestyle, values, or aesthetic sensibilities of the individual.
