The proliferation of timber batten elements in contemporary architecture shows no signs of abating; timber screening offers an effective way to soften a facade, and to add warmth and texture. However, finding an alternative that offers colour stability, is non-combustible, low-maintenance, long-lasting, and easy to install can be challenging. Until recently, when PSP began supplying Archi-Line by Knotwood, a state-of-the-art aluminium batten product that mimics the look, feel, and texture of real wood.
Based on a two-part system; the backing component is fixed to the substrate, then the batten is clipped on to conceal the fixings for a seamless finish. Archi-Line is available in a variety of shapes and sizes that can be used with our batten extenders, spacers, and backing systems.
Archi-Line accommodates different architectural styles and project requirements through its ability to have batten angle options and different backing alternatives to create a variety of designs, shares PSP’s Ashton Lines-Sherwood.
“It’s also very simple to install – saving labour costs – and lightweight, meaning less structural support material is required without compromising on its strength and durability.”
Archi-Line is a third of the weight of steel and 50% lighter than wood, which means there are so many more possibilities for residential and commercial style applications.
Using a revolutionary sublimation process, Archi-Line offers an extensive range of realistic finishes to complement any project.
“The range includes traditional warm, woody hues as well as contemporary black and white finishes,” shares Ashton. “Archi-Line aluminium battens offer a durable alternative to timber, featuring minimal colour change over time.”
Colour stability is one of the standout features of Archi-Line’s aluminium batten systems, and all colours have been rigorously tested to withstand the most extreme environments.
The battens are coated in a top coat of exterior grade paint which is baked on to provide resistance to chipping, flaking, blistering and scratching, making the battens more robust with minimal maintenance.
Archi-Line aluminium battens are non-combustible with a Group Number 1 fire rating, and PSP stocks a range of sizes and colours including: 50mm x 25mm, 50mm x 50mm and 50mm x 100mm battens in White Flat, Black Cedar, Iroko and Western Red Cedar. Other colours and size options are available on request.
Archi-Line battens have the added benefit of contributing to sustainability and eco-friendly construction practices shares Ashton.
“Choosing a material with sustainability in mind is becoming more paramount. Aluminium boasts one of the highest recycling rates of any metal and the recycling process requires only 5% of the initial energy consumed to create it. Archi-Line uses VOC-free coatings, and lead-free finishes, and is committed to ecologically responsible production processes.”
Archi-Line has been successfully integrated into a number of standout projects, including a recent install in Kmart, Dunedin, and a range of projects in Australia, including in The Block Australia.
While traditional timber battens may require more frequent maintenance to prevent the growth of mould, mildew, and lichens, aluminium battens like Archi-Line offer a lower-maintenance alternative. The material composition of aluminium ensures that it’s unaffected by these elements, providing long-lasting performance with minimal upkeep. Yearly maintenance, such as hosing down or brushing off debris, keeps the battens looking pristine, thanks to Archi-Line’s advanced durability properties, which ensure minimal colour change over time.
“Archi-Line doesn't require re-staining, recoating, or resealing. To maintain its appearance, regularly hose the battens down to remove any loose residue,” says Ashton.
For caked-on deposits, simply use a soft bristle brush with a mild pH-neutral detergent.
The low maintenance qualities of Archi-Line are a big drawcard for architects and designers, says Ashton, as they can be assured the building will look good for years to come.
“They like how it has good fade-resistant properties, looks realistic and is low maintenance – it’s great for commercial projects, apartment complexes, schools, retirement developments as there’s no need for ongoing maintenance costs with stain/paint and labour.”
