The benefits of skylights

The main reason people choose to add skylights to their home or office is for the natural daylight. Reducing exposure to artificial light while increasing natural sunlight has a number of positive effects, such as boosting vitamin D, which is essential to overall health and wellness, improving sleep and productivity, and more. If you are looking to have a happier healthier home, a skylight can be a great addition.

Aside from working wonders on your physical health, natural light from skylights can also combat seasonal depression. Many people start to experience Seasonal Affective Disorder and major depression episodes during the fall and winter months because they see less sunshine. By adding a skylight, even the greyest of skies cannot keep your house dark for long.

It has been noted how smaller spaces tend to look larger when there is a skylight. Part of the reason is the effect of natural light on a space. The other is having a window overhead to give the illusion of more space than there actually is. That is why cramped rooms, particularly bathrooms, tend to have skylights.

You can use skylights and other design elements to make a small home look and feel more much spacious. Plus, you don’t have to worry about obstructing the skylight, since it is in the ceiling, enabling you to use your walls to add pictures and shelving.

One of the best cosmetic changes you can make to a home is to include a skylight or two. Since skylights are so popular, most people are willing to pay more to have them already included in the house. This means that if you are planning to sell your home in the future, a skylight can be a wonderful investment.

Skylights aren’t solely for light. If you choose a model that can be opened up, you also gain ventilation. This is great for rooms that don’t get much fresh air, such as the bathroom, and can be wonderful for letting out steam from hot shows or helping stuffy air circulate. Skylights can also be used as a natural vent in the summer months.
