The latest trends in shading design show a move towards flexibility, longevity, and refined aesthetics in outdoor spaces. Homeowners and designers alike are embracing shading solutions that adapt to changing weather conditions through the use of smart technology, where sun and wind sensors allow shades to automatically adjust, offering seamless convenience and enhanced protection against the elements.
In terms of form, there’s a noticeable move toward organic, flowing shapes, like wave-shaped sails and outdoor curtains, which bring a softer, natural feel to outdoor spaces. These innovative designs add a biophilic element, and create a welcoming atmosphere, contrasting with traditional, rigid structures.
To better understand how to choose outdoor shading solutions, we spoke to SunCraft’s Kate Grubb who shares how the latest innovations offer opportunities to transform outdoor areas into functional, comfortable, and visually engaging extensions of the home.
When designing shade systems it’s important to balance the need for sun protection while preserving natural light, shares Kate.
“We balance sun protection with preserving natural light by using our specialised simulation software, which integrates GPS location data to model the sun's path throughout the day and year.”
This technology means shade systems can be designed to provide optimal protection from sun exposure while still allowing natural light to filter into the outdoor space when needed. This has the same effect for maintaining unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape.
“By leveraging the retractable nature of our shade systems, along with the ability to adjust the height of the sails it allows the shade to be easily extended or retracted based on the user’s preference, providing full coverage when needed and opening up the view when desired.”
SunCraft’s height adjustment feature also enables control over the sail’s position, allowing sunlight to be blocked while still keeping the landscape in view, ensuring the natural beauty of the surroundings isn’t compromised.
Wave-shaped sails are the latest innovation in outdoor shading solutions, offering a relaxed, open-air atmosphere compared to rigid systems. They provide adaptable coverage for sun and rain, allowing adjustments to maintain light and airflow, making outdoor spaces feel both protected and airy.
SunCraft’s Soliday Raff wave-shaped motorised sail is a perfect example of how a wave-shaped design not only enhances a home’s aesthetic with a soft, flowing appearance but also adds a dynamic element to the outdoor space.
Functionally, it provides the flexibility to adjust the sail’s coverage for optimal sun and rain protection while maintaining a breezy atmosphere, and the range of high-quality fabrics and colour options mean it can be customised to suit any aesthetic. The wave-shaped sails can be easily integrated in existing pergolas, and make a great solution for courtyards up to 100m2.
Because the system is motorised, it also offers several key benefits that significantly enhance both functionality and user convenience, shares Kate, ensuring optimal comfort through the integration of sun and wind sensors, which automatically adjust the sail based on weather conditions
“This automation not only provides peace of mind but also makes the system easy to operate with minimal user input – with the touch of a button, the motorised sail can be extended or retracted, allowing for effortless adjustments throughout the day.”
Outdoor curtains are another versatile solution that adds style to outdoor spaces while offering flexible options for sun protection and privacy.
“At SunCraft, we offer several stylish fabric options, ranging from very open weaves that allow for light and airflow to more tightly woven fabrics for greater sun protection,” shares Kate.
When selecting fabrics, it's important to consider the location and climate, and SunCraft are experts in helping clients choose the option that will have the greatest impact and longevity.
“In hotter, sunnier climates, we recommend more closed weaves that provide excellent UV protection and block harsh sunlight while still allowing a comfortable amount of natural light. For cooler or breezier areas, a more open weave can maintain airflow and keep the space feeling light and airy.”
There are numerous customisation options available, and SunCraft’s curtains can be installed on either an anodised aluminium track for a sleek, modern look or on stainless steel wire rope for a more flexible, industrial aesthetic.
Additionally, the curtains can be customised with corners up to a radius of 200mm, allowing for smooth and tailored edges, and SunCraft offers options like eyelets or hooks, giving you flexibility in how the curtains are secured.
When choosing outdoor shading solutions like motorised sails or curtains, homeowners should consider several key factors related to weather resistance and durability, shares Kate.
“First, the quality and material of the fabric are crucial, as high-end fabrics, such as those we offer at SunCraft, provide excellent UV protection, water resistance, and the ability to withstand prolonged exposure to the elements without degrading. “
Another consideration is the hardware, including corrosion-resistant components like stainless steel or aluminium, which ensure long-lasting performance even in coastal or humid environments.
“Additionally, motorised sails equipped with sun and wind sensors offer an extra layer of protection by automatically retracting in strong winds to prevent damage.”
Finally, regular maintenance, such as cleaning and checking for any wear or tear, can significantly extend the lifespan of the shading system, ensuring homeowners enjoy both functionality and durability over time.
