When it comes to creating a home that exudes timeless elegance, French-inspired furniture and décor stand out for their sophistication and charm. Drawing inspiration from the rustic beauty of the French countryside, this design style seamlessly blends the old with the new, creating spaces that feel both refined and lived-in. We sat down with French Country Collections head buyer and director Stephanie Kiteos to explore the essence of French-inspired interiors, and to discuss their latest collection.
“Timeless elegance in French-inspired décor lies in its ability to create spaces that feel both elegant and lived-in, effortlessly blending the old with the new to create an ambience that is as inviting as it is enduring,” says Kiteos.
It's about capturing the essence of the French countryside lifestyle and infusing it into every corner of your home. What makes this style enduring is its ability to transcend fleeting trends, embracing natural materials such as aged wood, stone, and wrought iron, which lend authenticity and durability to the pieces.
This style works by pairing and layering textures and fabrics, using high-quality materials such as linens, cast iron, stoneware, and reclaimed wood. The use of reclaimed materials emphasises a sustainable approach, contributing to the enduring nature of French country design.
“French-inspired décor shows a true commitment to tradition and heritage,” shares Kiteos. “Unlike design styles that follow trends, French country style remains loyal to its own aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the timeless beauty of the French countryside and the rich cultural heritage of the region.”
“Start with a neutral and solid base of pieces, such as our Dume linen sofa and Rhone reclaimed elm wood coffee table; these pieces offer both simple elegance and durability, setting the stage for a timeless aesthetic.”
Once you have established this foundation, incorporating opulent accents can elevate the space.
“Consider adding a touch of luxury with our Belle Vie gold mirror or our Diana crystal chandelier, both of which add a sense of grandeur to any room.”
Design motifs like classic toile patterns, botanical prints, and landscapes in wall art are hallmarks of French country design and can be integrated through smaller accents. And don’t forget to include the more, tactile, cosy elements.
“Layering textiles like cushions or wool throws can introduce texture and richness, further enhancing the luxurious feel of the space,” shares Kiteos.
Lastly, thoughtfully curated accessories, such as ceramic collections and cast-iron candleholders, contribute to the charm and heritage of French design, achieving a perfect equilibrium between opulence and simplicity.
“Displaying collections of ceramics or cast-iron candelabra and candleholders, like our Dax candleholders, can add depth and character to the room, infusing it with the charm and heritage of French design.”
French gardens and outdoor spaces are renowned for their elegance, and individuals can bring a touch of this design to their outdoor areas through careful furniture and décor choices.
“Start by selecting pots and planters in classic shapes and materials such as terracotta or ceramic, adding greenery and floral accents for a lush atmosphere,” says Kiteos. “For seating areas, opt for wrought iron or wicker furniture with plush cushions, providing both comfort and timeless style.”
Incorporating marble tabletops and accents adds a touch of sophistication to outdoor dining spaces while lighting features such as candle holders and hurricanes create a warm and inviting ambience for evening gatherings. By combining these elements, individuals can create outdoor spaces that are perfect for enjoying leisurely moments alfresco in the timeless and elegant French style.
