Ministry of Education Update: End of Open-Plan Classrooms

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced it will no longer approve new open-plan classroom designs. The decision follows feedback from schools highlighting issues with noise, distraction, and student behaviour, which were found to negatively affect learning outcomes.

Future classroom designs will return to standard layouts that prioritise flexibility and functionality without being open-plan. While the focus has shifted, many principles from earlier MoE guidelines - such as good acoustics, varied learning zones, and quality lighting - remain essential for creating effective learning environments.

This change reflects a broader move toward designing classrooms that better support student engagement, wellbeing, and achievement.

Creating Classrooms in a Large Space with Sound Absorbing Room Dividers

• Problem: A North Island school needed to divide a large open area into multiple classrooms. The space had poor acoustics, and noise carried easily, making it difficult for students to concentrate.
