For over two decades, New Zealand-based interior design company Sophistication in Design has assisted clients with their kitchen and bathroom designs. While initially involved in manufacturing kitchens and porcelain-stone benchtops, the company shifted its focus to exclusively offering high-end interior design services.
With a studio featuring two fully functional Gaggenau show kitchens, Sophistication in Design has become the go-to for those seeking personalised and sophisticated kitchen design solutions.
Lighter kitchens have a timeless appeal, and according to Debbie Daly, kitchen and interior designer at Sophistication in Design, they remain a coveted trend, especially the classic all-white design. Daly remarks that “a lighter approach in kitchen design creates a clean aesthetic, offering a sense of freshness and openness to the space.”
“This design style is particularly beneficial for homes with a Hampton theme; I like to feature light cabinetry in a shaker style paired with a Dekton benchtop, with Aura being my favoured choice,” says Daly. “And while we’re all for keeping it simple, a few complementary accessories are necessary to save the space from becoming overly sterile.”
The use of light colours in kitchens is not just about aesthetics. Light hues play a crucial role in reflecting available light, making the space appear bigger and brighter. This is especially advantageous in areas with limited natural light, creating an inviting and comfortable kitchen environment.
“Light kitchen cabinets in neutral, pale grey and off-white shades reflect available light around a room beautifully,” says Daly.
“When the kitchen lacks natural light, going for a lighter kitchen option brightens up the space and creates an inviting, comfortable kitchen that you will enjoy using for years to come; adding task and ambient lighting to the space will add a whole new level of interest to the kitchen,” Daly adds.
Project: Light in Design
Sophistication in Design's recent Light in Design project, showcased on ArchiPro, exemplifies the welcoming feel of a light kitchen. According to Daly, the client's desire for bespoke elements, soft-closing mechanisms, and UV filters were a crucial consideration for this project.
“My client was interested in having a few key items bespoke, like custom oak handles and oak flooring,” says Daly. “After spending time with the client, I understood that attention to detail was significant; she loves her home and wanted a warm, comfortable design that was easy to work in.”
“The small appliances had to be hidden away, the microwave behind doors, all hardware was to be Hettich German hardware with soft closing mechanisms,” Daly continues.
“The finishes had to be robust and last the harsh Hawkes Bay sun, so the best UV filters for the timber finish were required, as the kitchen had glass along one wall.”
Despite budget constraints and a tight timeline due to a whole-house renovation, the result was a kitchen that seamlessly blended timeless style with functionality.
In contrast to light kitchens, dark kitchens bring a sense of drama and sophistication to a space. Daly notes that dark colours, particularly in matte finishes, offer a restful and elegant atmosphere, along with the ability to play with textures and finishes for benchtops, adding versatility to the design. In particular, Daly highlights black as a flexible colour that can create contemporary and classic kitchen styles.
“Using dark tones in a kitchen design allows for a unique interplay of light and shadow. LED lights strategically placed, such as under benchtop bars or in the spaces, can create a dramatic effect in the evenings,” says Daly.
“Additionally, dark cabinetry allows for a wide range of textures and finishes for benchtops, offering a striking visual contrast.”

The client's desire to showcase Gaggenau appliances led to a complete redesign involving removing walls and integrating appliances. “With servo-driven hardware, integrated fridges and dishwashers, and a strategically planned scullery, the result was a contemporary and sleek kitchen that surpassed the client's expectations,” says Daly.
“With this project, the emphasis was on achieving a specific look and function, with the budget taking a backseat to the overall aesthetic,” Daly adds.
Light and dark kitchen designs each contribute unique benefits to a home. Light kitchens, with their bright and airy feel, are perfect for creating the illusion of more space and light. On the other hand, dark kitchens exude sophistication and theatre, offering a versatile and luxurious aesthetic.
Through expertise and attention to detail, Sophistication in Design showcases how both ends of the spectrum can result in stunning and functional kitchen designs. Whether one leans toward the classic allure of a light white kitchen or the dramatic appeal of a darker hue, the key lies in creating a space aligned with one’s personal style while enhancing the culinary experience at home.
