As the first construction company to take on a mass timber mid-rise residential project in New Zealand, Kobe Construction came away from Clearwater Quays with a tonne of new-found expertise, and passion for the promising future of timber construction.
Clearwater Quays is built on the shores of Lake Rotoiti in Canterbury's prestigious Clearwater development.
Because timber sequesters carbon, mass timber buildings are a significant step towards sustainable architecture.
The structure is New Zealand's first mid-rise mass timber building.
Unlike traditional concrete structures, timber allows for work to continue below erected floors.
Made from timber, much of the building was able to be prefabricated, saving time on site.
Continuing the theme, timber has been used throughout the fit out, creating a soft, warm interior.
The stairwell also features beautiful timber floors and exposed LVL beams.
The sculptural timber staircase adds visual interest to the roadside façade.
