Asterias, a cactus that grows in the mountainous regions of Mexico, lends its name to this new design from Patricia Urquiola.
A generously sized round table, featuring a central base reminiscent of the cactus from which it takes its name. It consists of six curved, wedge-shaped, wooden panels, applied protruding over the central plinth. The panels are 3D printed. The top (160 or 180 cm) features a rounded edge sub-divided, in the wood version, into four wedges that give rise to an interesting geometric pattern.
The table can also be fitted with a practical accessory: a central Lazy Susan turntable, very popular in Asian countries.
"Affection is a subtle connection which is established with objects. [...] Because we have to live with objects daily" - Patricia Urquiola
Patricia Urquiola was born in Oviedo in Spain. After studying at the Facultad de Arquitetura de Madrid, she graduated from the Milan Polytechnic in 1989 with Achille Castiglioni and in 2001 opened her own studio.
Being a Spanish and an Italian designer has undoubtedly influenced her work. She brings together the rigor of her training in Milan with a creative side that comes from her roots.
She has completed several projects and collections for Molteni&C. Her diamond table won the Red Dot Award for Best Product in 2005.
For over 45 years the Dawson family and our wonderful staff have been filling homes with designer furniture sourced from New Zealand and abroad. We travel extensively, collaborating with our manufacturing partners to ensure we bring the best value product we can find. Our philosophy is simple - to showcase great quality, honest furniture from brilliant craftspeople in a welcoming environment.
How do we achieve this?
We are extremely lucky to have fostered strong relationships with renowned international furniture brands and designers including Molteni & C, Timothy Oulton, Dedon and Tribu. Buying directly from international suppliers enables us to remove the added layers of costs and complexity so we can pass the savings on to the consumer.
What is great quality?
We believe it is a fine balance of design and materials. That is why prior to adding any product collections we meet the artisans in their workshops and factories anywhere they manufacture around the world, which involves us spending up to 3 months a year travelling to Asia and Europe. All too often we have been shown cheaper items but they turn out to be inferior. All our staff are highly trained professionals who can tell you about our furniture in detail.
