About Jackie Ranken

If you had to choose a word to summarise Jackie’s photographic approach, it would “playful”.

‘It’s about getting rid of seriousness,’ she said. ‘Play is about experimentation. It's about bringing back that childhood freedom of having a go at something – and not worrying about what other people are going to think about it.

The idea of making mistakes is okay, because we learn from those. That's part of the play.’

The secret is to learn how to play ‘constructively’ so that as you're playing, you're not going off in all directions. Make one change at a time. Not too many changes, otherwise you can lose your way. Playing opens the door to creativity. Play is free. Don't be scared. It's photography. It's supposed to be fun.

Jackie has over thirty eight years’ experience within the visual arts. Exhibiting nationally and internationally.

She combines her art practice with teaching and is a presenter in workshops and seminars internationally. A long time lover of monochromatic photography and creator of multi-layered narratives via in camera multiple exposures and intentional camera movements.
She learnt her craft by working within the photographic industry as a darkroom technician, freelance and sports photographer, wedding photographer, commercial photographer and photojournalist. In 1996 after gaining her Associate Diploma in Fine Arts she began working as a teacher of ‘Fine art’ photography.

Since 2001 she has won many prestigious photography awards which have culminated in making her a Grand Master of both the Australian Institute of Professional Photography and the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography. She is a Canon Master and EIZO Ambassador and has been an international photography awards judge since 2002.
