Luise Fong is an award winning Malaysian-born New Zealand artist with work located in collections across the country. Fong’s distinct postmodern practice is driven by intuition. Her moving, abstract paintings allude to a microscopic world, characterised by an aesthetic formalism.
Thoughts from the artist: For me, these Tondo paintings represent myself and my painting practice over the years. My painting and myself being so connected. Visual elements such as the: a nova, circles, a fern leaf, droplets of gesso, gold and silver leaf represent aspects of my life, my thoughts and my painting practice. Celebrations of our natural environment, the native bush, the oceans. A nova being when a star shines at its brightest, the use of the gold and silver leaf sometimes suggests sunlight on the water. I choose to represent my ideas in the abstract, as in this way the viewer is able to interpret what they see in the paintings, to their own experience of the world.
