An exquisite Sofreh kilim, a true masterpiece with a rich history. 

The Persian sofreh (from the Arabic ‘sufrah’, meaning ‘dining table’), is a traditional cloth, often spread on the ground, on which to place food, which is considered sacred. The cloth is symbolically used as a clean surface where it is possible to eat without contaminating the food.

These squarish size flat weave handmade woollen kilims, using mainly vegetable dyes, are originally made by the nomadic tribes of Iran, mainly in the southern part such as Afshar Sirjan, who used to migrate, and still, some do, approximately 900km from the summer to their winter encamping with all their belongings and animals. 

The Sofreh kilims are specifically used as floor coverings due to its practicality when migrating, for their daily meals where they place all the food on the kilim and sit around, hence the square shape which is more practical when the family sits together just as similar to sitting around the table. In addition, they are also used to keep the flour when making their daily bread. They are often in simple geometric designs, passed on from mother to daughter with their own creativity.

Hailing from the Afshar tribe in the captivating Sirjan region of Iran, this kilim showcases traditional craftsmanship, and was woven more than 20 years ago. Handwoven from 100% wool and vegetable dyes, it emanates a timeless charm, making it a captivating addition to any space.
